The Davis Lost and Found Facebook is great. So is the Nextdoor. I notice that between the two social media, many dogs were lost, found, and reunited. I am glad to see Friends of YCAS has a resource link on what to do. I fully support the community to help with the reunification but it would be nice to have a way to alert the shelter just in case the owner looks for their lost dog there or a way to scan for chip. People in Davis who found lost dogs are very resourceful, they often take the dogs to a vet to scan. I think for your dog bite survey maybe Davis Lost and Found Facebook and Nextdoor might be a good place to post it.

Hi, Julielani! I do see that the Friends of Yolo County Animal Shelter website provides guidance on what to do when someone finds a loose dog, but it doesn't seem like that info is available on the YCAS website itself: https://www.friendsofycas.org/found-dog. This week I happened to see someone post in a local Davis Facebook group about a dog they had found on their street, and within the hour the owner (who lived nearby) had replied and the two were reunited. It seems a lot of people are already following the recommended steps (i.e., post on social media, talk to neighbors, etc. before bringing an animal to the shelter). You make an excellent point that this kind of thing happens on Nextdoor, or people post on Nextdoor wondering what to do, so if volunteers could be providing guidance on these steps within these groups, that could be really helpful, even if a shelter doesn't have a formal program!

Hi Elise,
I love to see this program implemented here in Davis where I live. I see a lot of people post about finding lost pets but are unsure about what to do with them on Nextdoor. I sense that if there is such a program, many might opt to hold on to the pets if the liability of holding someone's pets can be addressed through rescues or shelters. Also, people would have to be informed about the logistics of such a program to make sure the owners know how to reconnect with their lost pets - right now the shelter seems to be the place.
I don't know if there is such a program here in Davis. I think a good place to ask this question would be on Nextdoor.
I have a small non-profit but I am not a rescue. However, if there is anything I can do to help support such a program, please let me know.

Hi, everyone,
At the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program, we are working on talking points to strengthen shelters' communication with municipal stakeholders regarding recommendations that encourage finders to temporarily hold found dogs in an attempt to locate the owner before bringing them in to the shelter.
In order to address public safety concerns, we'd love to be able to zero in on any data surrounding dog bite incidents that have occurred while a finder is temporarily holding or fostering a found dog. This could include finders who are only holding the dog for a short period of time while they look for the owner but were unable to commit to fostering overnight.
If you have a "Wait 48" or other similar finder-foster program, informal or formal, could you fill out this quick two-question survey?

We will share any data collected. Thank you!
