  • 1.  Ideas on how to leverage your community to help keep pets out of shelters.

    Posted 06-09-2022 12:03 PM

I wanted to share some resources to help support the desire to keep pets in homes and out of shelters.

For messaging the help needed, please look at Valley Humane Society's new strategy: Share the Care https://valleyhumane.org/share-the-care/

I like this strategy because it provides positive, proactive steps to allow the community to help. I'm scared we might revert to messaging that builds fear or shame in our community. An example of that messaging would feature a call to action that would equal a negative result if the community does not follow. Such as Adopt, or we'll need to euthanize. I believe it's okay to share the message of the reality in our communities but provide tangible ways people can help that allow for proactive involvement. Share The Care does this.

As a care center or shelter, we have strategies that we know work: Such as

    • Encourage the utilization of a rehoming program
    • Empower your fosters to be adoption ambassadors
    • Ask your community to help promote your adoptable animals
    • Share found animals on social media and ask the community to help find their owners
    • Evaluate your length of stay and determine when it makes sense to waive adoption fees.
    • Ask the community to sign up as a safety net foster home for a community member in need.

Home To Home can help you manage your rehoming program, empower your community to foster other community members' pets, and allow your internal fosters to promote and adopt their foster pets.

Here is a video on how Home To Home was used to help a foster parent be an adoption ambassador. https://youtu.be/d1qV9W-d9Kg

To add just a little more to this really great list: utilizing your volunteers. You already have buy in from them and they are always looking for ways to help. Even if it's sharing social posts or putting up adoption posters around town. Your volunteers are a powerful resource.

Love this, Erin! And your volunteers can oversee your rehoming program and social media. Wisconsin Humane utilizes volunteers to manage their Home To Home postings very successfully.
