Trello Board Questions

  • 1.  Trello Board Questions

I know that there have been a lot of Trello board threads and some amazing examples but I have a couple questions that I didn't find in past threads.

We currently use Facebook for our foster pleas.  We have some fosters that aren't on FB so we keep a list with their names and will contact them directly.  Our FB page is so cluttered and older posts of animals that need fostering get lost.  We post dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc, all on the same page.  We also have informational/educational posts plus our proud and excited fosters will post photos of their current foster animal on there.  As I said, cluttered!

If we switch to Trello, can we set it up that we get alerts when someone is interested?  Or would they just get a link to our emails or a scheduling software option?  Does the shelter need to pay for using Trello?  Will our fosters need to pay to use it?

    Thanks in advance,

My shelter is not currently using Trello but I've used it for some personal and professional projects in the past. It looks like they do offer non-profit pricing.

You may be able to do what you are looking for with the free version. If I was looking to use Trello, I would start by making my own personal free account and playing around with the board to see how I would want to get things configured. From what I recall, you can get email notifications when other users comment on items.

This is a really interesting approach to organizing fosters digitally outside of a social media platform. I'm curious to see what you end up doing!

Hi, Ellen! When I use Trello I just put my email address/phone number/appt scheduling link/however I'd like to be contacted on the board so that when people are interested they contact me or the relevant staff directly. Trello will remain free so long as there are less than 10 administrators (users with editing access) on your board. Trello DOES have integrations with Zapier so depending on if you'd like to be notified of interest a different way, there's probably a way to configure it through Zapier.

Hi, I have been researching Trello and my team has started a board. I would like to ask how did you guys introduce Trello to your Foster parents?

What are the pros and cons of Trello?

Did you get the outcome you wanted using Trello?

Thank you! Any help is appreciated!

We have a private Facebook group for our fosters that we use for animals that are available for foster but not adoption (puppies and kittens). We use a Trello Board for animals that are both available for foster and adoption (adult dogs/cats). We use a free version and it is available to be accessed by the public. It is the reason we only post animals that are available for both foster and adoption on there. My fosters know that they have to contact me in order to foster an animal on the Trello Board. For the public, we post a link to the foster page on our website so they can learn more about becoming a foster.

The dog side of our organization uses the Trello board to alert fosters of what dogs we have available.  Our fosters get the link when they sign up to be a foster and can look at it anytime.  We keep it updated weekly. They'll contact our foster coordinators if they are interested in fostering a dog that pops up.  We have it broken down in categories as Adult dogs, Puppies, Special Needs along with featuring the columns of Foster Found & Adopted.   We also use a separate trello boards for our dog/kitten fosters for fostering resources as well.  Its been helpful. For our kitten side, when a litter/kitten is picked up we have a sticker on the carrier with a qr code that leads to our trello board so its always as accessible.  We have found Trello very helpful!

    Hi there!

We've been using trello for a couple of years now and I love it. It's essentially a one-stop-shop for our foster resources and availability of foster animals. It's free to use for us, and our fosters can sign up for a free account to be able to comment on it and take a foster animal OR they email us if they don't want to make an account. Previously, we were sending out emails to all 300+ foster families for foster solicitations and it became burdensome just due to the lack of/ or sheer response and repetitive answering. Trello has made things MUCH simpler for us. The only issue we seem to have is some people cannot figure out how to use the board, even with a How To video on the board, and this problem seems to be limited to the "older" generation. Linking our board if you want to take a peek!

Thank you to Ellen for asking the original question, and for all of the responses! Our shelter just started using Trello for fosters last week and have already had positive feedback. We're hoping this will be a more streamlined way to communication foster needs.

We started using Trello about 2 years ago and it is literally a life saver! Like many other organizations, we were sending out foster pleas daily and most were left unanswered. Since we started using Trello we rarely have animals awaiting foster placement! We have one board that includes all foster resources, news, and any animal who can be publicly viewed for fostering opportunities. We label them with medical and behaviour concerns so fosters know all about them and can decide if they are a good fit for their home before contacting us. While there is non profit pricing available, we find the free version to be excellent and have disabled comments to keep our fosters information private, they simply call or email us indicating who they would like to foster. It is a great way for those who are not in the shelter to know who is awaiting a foster home and also a great recruitment strategy when members of the public are able to see what we do and then can apply to help.
