Hi everyone,
The video for Turning Fear into Friendship: Building Trust with Shelter Cats is available for those who missed the live session. We didn't have time for more than a few Q&A during the webcast, here's Dr. Ellis's answers to your questions.

Subject: Turning Fear into Friendship: Building Trust w Shelter Cats - February 2025 Maddie's Monthly Behavior Connection
How often does your organization take in cats that are super scared?
Some cats are scared for a few days, other cats for a much longer period of time. While they're often not a large percentage of our cat population, unless we have solid plans to help them these cats can end up staying with us for a while. During Maddie's Monthly Behavior Connection on Thurs February 27 at noon PT/3 pm ET, we learned from Dr. Jacklyn Ellis about how she and her team support these cats at Toronto Humane Society.
In November 2024 during a Maddie's Insights webcast, Dr. Ellis spoke to us about her research regarding monitoring cat well-being. She referenced her behavior modification program for fearful cats during this session, so we decided to invite her back for another session where she could talk about her program in more detail!

About Dr. Jacklyn Ellis:
Jacklyn Ellis is board certified by the Animal Behavior Society as a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, is Certified in Shelter Behavior – Cat by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and is the Director of Behavior at Toronto Humane Society. She earned her PhD in Animal Welfare at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, where she conducted research on methods for reducing stress in shelter cats. Her work has been published widely in peer reviewed journals and she has presented at many national and international conferences, particularly on feline stress and elimination behavior. She has recently authored two chapters for a new edition of the leading textbook on the behavior and welfare of shelter animals.
