    Hi all!

I am currently applying for a grant that will allow our shelter to get GPS tracking collars for our foster dogs.  When the dogs first arrive and come into foster, they are often very timid and may have a flight response.  The most likely time for a dog to run away is when it has first arrived, and unfortunately has not had a chance to bond with the foster yet.  This can provide challenges in locating the dog. So far in my research, I have found plenty of collars that require a subscription but a select few that don't. I was wondering if you all have had any luck with GPS dog collars that have no subscription that are reasonably priced.

    Thanks so much in advance!

    Hi Jenn,

I am not a rescue but have helped (countless times) finding lost newly adopted/fostered dogs. I too thought of GPS collar which is expensive and often comes with a subscription. Although not recommended by Apple, I find their AirTag helpful. There is no subscription and it costs $25. The downside of the AirTag is that it relies on the proximity of other smart phones so Bluetooth rather than satellite and this means that if the dog hides in a field where  there are no other phones locating the pup would be difficult. However, it should be ok in a residential area.  Although there might be a lag in detection rather than a real time signal with a GPS. The lag time depending how many cell phones are around. So daytime is usually better than night time. While it is not perfect, it is better than nothing at all.  You should give it a try. Put the Air Tag on a dog and  have someone walks it around your area. If that person has a phone, you will be able to get the location readily. Have that person turned off their phone so the signals would have to come from other surrounding phones which mimic a real situation - lost dog is on their own. Give it a test run. Good Luck

    Hey Jenn,

I haven't looked into this, but I have to say it's a GREAT idea and starting point. I'm always trying to build relationships with companies and you would be suprised at what they'd be willing to do. Have you tried reaching out to the different companies to see what they offer for rescues or shelters? That might be  a good place to start. Maybe if you order say 10 collars they may donate the collars completely and you just pay the subscription. You could also raise money for your foster program to cover those costs, just a thought! Hope this helps, and I may try doing this as well and see what happens!

    Hi Jenn

I do run a Rescue and I include Airtag in my monthly budget to keep track of fosters and reduce the potential of lost dogs.
They work great and have helped in emergencies.
I advise everyone having their phones on when looking for the dog tag works best with the closest signal and tracking can be shared via multiple users. More accurately finds location.
4x pack AirTags and great water proof cases are they way to go .
About 91$ cases including on Amazon.

Technique is to make sure the tag is in a waterproof case and the battery only last 11 months so keeping spare tags or switching batteries is common.

We do intake flight risks and have proven this  useful in the case one escapes.
Airtags have proven reliable in case of emergency.

Hope this helps worth the experience and expense

We have trouble with the cases, the dogs lose them or chew on the cases.  What cases do you use for the airtag?

Can you share link or pictures?
We use martingale collars so we can put on collar. I think that is what you use....
