Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and NY Farm Net partner with Rural Minds to launch a free, online mental health and suicide prevention course.
It is designed to give practical support strategies and resources for rural Americans to navigate mental health challenges.
Outreach Director for NY Farm Net Adam Howell told 12 News that, due to rural isolation and stress, rural communities have a 65% higher chance of suicide than urban populations.
"Farming in general an isolated job," Howell said. "It's usually done with little interaction with others. It's not like working at a company, it's not like going to an office environment and because it's in a rural area these are people who work in a kind of profession where they don't have easy access to services."
Howell said this course seeks to help people who may have these thoughts. It is also for people to look out for signs of mental distress in others.
The course is free and is available at this link.
