  • 1.  Dogs' Role in Furthering Cancer Research

    Posted 11-01-2024 02:59 PM

Today marks the beginning of two National Awareness Months, Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Pet Cancer Awareness Month. For this reason, I wanted to highlight a great article covering how pets have aided in cancer research:

How Dogs Are Advancing Human Cancer Research

A few key points from the article:
    • A description of comparative oncology, or the study of naturally developing cancers in animals as models for human disease.
    • Highlighting bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, melanoma, breast cancer, osteosarcoma, head and neck cancer, insulinomas as forms of canine cancers that share characteristics of some human forms of cancer.
    • The Integrated Canine Data Commons, a database for canine cancer data that researchers use to study human medicine.
    • The unique perspective household pets bring to cancer research. An animal test subject restricted to a laboratory would not provide the level of insight that a household pet that breathes the same air, drinks the same water, and lives in the same environment as the people they live with does. Pet parents have developed a deeper connection to their pets, and can provide better insights on how a dog has developed an illness. This gives us an example how the human-animal bond is essential in understanding the complexities of both, particularly when it comes to disease.

What are your thoughts around the integration of animals to further research on humans? Do you have any insights around working with pets or their people who have cancer?
