Get Ready for the Flu Day reminds us to prepare for flu season—and that includes caring for our pets, too.
For people, that means getting your annual flu shot, stocking up on tissues, hand sanitizer, and making a plan if someone in your household gets sick.
But did you know pets can also catch their own forms of the flu? Dogs, for example, can get canine influenza, which spreads easily in kennels, dog parks, and shelters. While it isn’t the same virus humans get, it can make dogs feel just as lousy with coughs, runny noses, and fatigue.
Tips to Stay Ahead of Flu Season
-
For People: Get your flu vaccine, wash your hands often, and stay home if you’re feeling sick.
-
For Pets: Ask your vet if the canine influenza vaccine is right for your dog, avoid contact with sick pets, and keep food/water bowls clean.
By preparing early, you help protect the health of your entire family—two- and four-legged alike!
