I wanted to share a video created by MedVet on the perspective of veterinary social workers on the human-animal bond, which was just released recently!

"The bond we share with our pets is one of the most meaningful relationships we'll ever experience. They're our companions, our comfort, our family. They bring joy, connection, and unconditional love into our lives every single day.

Our Veterinary Social Work team reflects on what these relationships truly mean: how they shape us, support us, and guide the care decisions we make for our beloved animals.

Whether it's celebrating the little moments or navigating the harder ones, the love we share with our pets reminds us just how powerful the human-animal bond can be."

If you haven't already, please also take a look at HABRI'S resource hub all about the human-animal bond:

Thanks for sharing! I've always wondered how Veterinary Social Worker roles/narrative changes when considering the more negative 'pet effect' such as overwhelmed caregiver or when pet need insecurities are causing stress in a home. I do believe pet effects are more positive than negative(!) but is there a change in the narrative or approach with those scenarios?

Yes, we should definitely be intentional about addressing the negative effects of having pet companions! The examples you have given demonstrate a key area for veterinary social workers: discussing the quality of life of pets with special needs as well as guiding pet families through end-of-life decisions. To achieve better outcomes for both the people and the pet involved, veterinary social workers should adopt an approach that prioritizes respecting the pet family's knowledge of their pet, while also considering what decisions would be most dignified for that pet.

Hi Rachel. I am so glad that you brought this up. We recently conducted a study with families to measure the joy and challenges of have pets. We are currently working on a report with the findings so stay tuned!
