  • 1.  It's Holiday Season Pet Safety Awareness Month!

    Posted 3 days ago

I hope you all had a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving. As the holiday season continues, please keep pets in mind. Here are a few items to consider to keep pets safe.

    • Food and treats: Keep pets on familiar diets; avoid fatty, richly spiced and toxic foods (chocolate, grapes/raisins, onions, xylitol, alcohol).

    • Decorations & plants: Secure trees so they don't tip; keep wires, batteries, tinsel, glass ornaments out of reach; be aware that holiday plants (mistletoe, holly, lilies, poinsettias) can be toxic.

    • Household traffic & stress: Visitors, other pets, and new schedules can stress animals-provide them a quiet retreat/space.

    • Fire & electrical hazards: Candles, lights, tree water, and heated items can pose risk to pets.

    • Trash & unexpected ingestion: Holiday wrappers, foil, wire ties, breakable ornaments, and snow-globe fluid can all be dangerous. Keep them away from your pets or supervise them to avoid accidents.

    • Travel & guest pets: If traveling or hosting, ensure pets are secured safely, have up-to-date ID/microchip, and know the "safe zone" when guests bring pets.

How do you create festive and safe pet spaces during the holiday season?

Great reminders - the holidays can be so chaotic for pets, and it's easy to overlook the little things that keep them safe. I always set up a "pet-only zone" with their bed, toys, and a baby gate so they can escape the noise when guests come over. I also double-check travel plans ahead of time, and sites like PetsWelcome are super helpful for finding pet-friendly places if you're on the road. Keeping things festive and safe definitely takes a bit of planning, but it's always worth it!
