Thank you for introducing this topic, Candice! I would like to share a few things I try to do to help others feel less lonely:
- Make it your secret job to make everyone feel welcome and included. If I'm at a social event and I notice someone is on their lonesome, I try to engage with them. When a person is trying to contribute in a group conversation, I make sure to turn my attention to them so at least one other person is listening.
- Follow through with plans to spend time with new soon-to-be friends. A lot of people will tell you "we should hang out!" but how often do they follow up on it with solid plans? I've been guilty of this too, of course. When the other person is receptive to it, I try to set up the time and place for when we can see each other next.
- Take a genuine interest in others. Actively listen and give the other person your full attention. When someone says they like something and they recommend it to you, write it down. Take mental notes of what is going on in someone's else's life and be sure to check in with them about it later. When I feel like someone truly cares and is keeping tabs on me, I feel a lot less lonely!
I would love to hear what steps others are taking to alleviate feelings of loneliness within themselves and the people around them!

Did you know that 52% of Americans report feeling lonely? Even when surrounded by people, you can still feel alone. Loneliness affects many people but is often hidden. Let's remove the stigma and talk about the impacts of loneliness and how we can help each other. For additional statistics on loneliness visit https://www.rootsofloneliness.com/loneliness-statistics.
