During the last week of September, we recognize National Women's Health and Fitness Day. This day was established in 2002 to promote physical activity and wellness for women.
Regular exercise has great physical and mental benefits. It can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis- which women are especially susceptible to as they age. It can also reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Getting 30 minutes of exercise a day will make a huge difference in your health! If you're short on time though, even a 10 minute walk during your lunch break is better than nothing. Taking your dog for a walk is a great opportunity for exercise and can add some fun as well!
Women's Health and Fitness Day is also a good time to think about some of the inequities that exist when it comes to women's involvement in sports. One example: girl's flag football has become really popular with high school students in Philadelphia! But some girls can't afford sports bras, which are necessary for them to participate. The local NFL team donated thousands of bras to local athletes so they have the equipment they need to play… which gives them confidence and gets them active!!
Do your organizations do anything to encourage physical activity in your community?
