As we close out March, Poison Prevention Month, the numbers are alarming. In the last 30 days alone, 201,545 human poisoning cases have been reported in the U.S., according to America's Poison Centers. But poisonings don't just impact humans-in 2024, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) handled over 451,000 cases of toxic exposures in non-human animals, a nearly 4% increase from the previous year.
Many of the same substances that harm humans-pesticides, rodenticides, household cleaners, and certain medications-are just as deadly to other animals including pets, wildlife, and livestock. Accidental poisonings are preventable, but they continue to cause suffering and death in both human and non-human animals.

What Can You Do?
✅ Store toxic products securely, away from pets and children.
✅ Use eco-friendly and pet-safe alternatives whenever possible.
✅ Properly dispose of hazardous chemicals to prevent environmental contamination.
✅ Act quickly-if you suspect a poisoning, seek immediate medical care for the human or veterinary care for the non-human or contact a poison control center at:
- Humans - National Poison Help Line in the U.S. (1-800-222-1222)
- Non-humans - ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Phone Number: (888) 426-4435).
