In recognition of World Maternal Mental Health Day, I’d like to highlight and discuss an article from the 2021 international Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. This article explores the potential benefits of human-animal interactions (HAI) on perinatal mental health. The review suggests that animals may offer emotional support, reduce stress, and enhance social connections during pregnancy. The authors advocate for further research to better understand the mechanisms and outcomes of HAI in the context of pregnancy. Here are some main points:

    • Factors such as age, relationship status, economic insecurity, and social isolation contribute to increased stress levels during pregnancy, which can adversely affect maternal mental health.
    • HAI, particularly with household pets, may serve as a protective factor by providing emotional support, reducing stress, and enhancing social connectedness, potentially mitigating the risk of perinatal mental health disorders.
    • Interactions with pets may influence the stress response system: leading to lower cortisol levels and higher oxytocin levels, which reduces stress and improve mental health outcomes.
    • There is a necessity for studies to explore how HAI affects perinatal mental health and to identify strategies for integrating pets into pregnancy care. Comprehensive research is needed to establish effective interventions and guidelines.

What are some things you have heard/learned about regarding companionship between expecting mothers and their pets?
