Today is National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day. (National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day November 7th, 2021). Lymphoma is a cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system, and can occur in many species, including humans, dogs, and cats.
According to Purdue University, "Lymphoma is one of the most common canine cancers, accounting for 7 - 24% of all canine tumors and 85% of all blood-based tumors." The occurrence rate of lymphoma in humans has risen the past decade and there are various treatment plans depending on the type of lymphoma. Possible causes of Lymphoma in dogs are viruses, bacteria, and chemical exposure. "Exposure to radiation and certain types of chemicals can also put some humans at higher risk." These are chemicals in our shared environment.
