Reports to:  Manager of Community Medicine; Anti-Cruelty Society

Job Description:

This is a full-time position for a veterinarian passionate about medicine and surgery for pets in need in the Chicago metro area.  The Community Medicine Veterinarian will divide their time between The Anti-Cruelty Society and our partner shelters to provide medical and surgical services to the animals in the clinic, shelter, and community programs operated by each partner organization. The Community Medicine Veterinarian works closely with Medical Directors, Directors of Operation, Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and reports directly to the Manager of Community Medicine to ensure Best Care for all Chicago animals within each organization. All employees of The Anti-Cruelty Society should uphold the PETS Work Culture Agreement through Praise, Engagement, Trust, and Support.

Essential Job Functions

       Medical/Surgical functions such as, but not limited to:

      Working within each organization’s capacity to provide comprehensive medical care to patients with speed and efficiency

      Surgeries including spay/neuter, other soft tissue surgeries and orthopedic surgeries, based on practitioner skill and comfort with procedures. (Opportunities for growth and additional training including HQHVSN training)

      Outpatient case management includes administration of medications, developing treatment plans and maintaining detailed medical records.

       General functions such as, but not limited to:

      Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols, and ensure all support staff are compliant

      Communicate effectively with management and colleagues on population and individual animals as needed

      Provide guidance to each shelter on best practices as it relates to infectious disease

      Practice low-stress animal handling

      Ensure appropriate handling and recording of controlled substances for patients

      Behave in a manner that upholds both personal and professional standards as an ambassador of each shelter at all times

       Other duties, as assigned

Requirements

       Licensed veterinarian in the state of Illinois or ability to obtain such licensure within 3 months of hire

       Work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours

       Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help

       Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly

       Work efficiently and effectively under stressful conditions

       Must be able to cope with death due to surgical complication or euthanasia

       Ability to creatively solve problems and make decisions

       Willing to adapt to different work environments and operations

       Having a personal vehicle is highly recommended

       Comfort working with a variety of practice management software systems
