Handout from Zan Lowell's presentation, Detective, Educator, Mediator: A Holistic Approach to Foster Behavior Support
Foster insights are invaluable to shelters & rescues, and no concern should ever be dismissed or taken more lightly than the foster presents it. At the same time, that initial presentation of a concern tends to only offer one perspective: the human’s. Zan’s presentation will walk through example cases of their tried and true process of taking an analytical approach that simultaneously gets to the root causes of an animal’s concerning or unwanted behaviors and promotes a more nuanced understanding of those animals’ needs among fosters, all without sacrificing compassion for either.
Zan your presentation was perfect for my needs! I am still a newbie foster but also creating "Kittenkind" a new program to foster orphan kittens. Our shelter is full of dedicated caregivers but has no overnight care and the couple of folks who can take kittens are doing all they can. I volunteered myself to create the program and serve as foster support. It's a lot! Your compassionate and insightful approach has given me confidence that I can do this. I tend to observe and reason as you displayed in your presentation. I am sure there is a long path with many not so effective support calls ahead, but that is ok.
Thank you Zan for your kindness, generosity and wisdom.
Karen
PS - Any suggestions from the community as I proceed with this fostering program would be greatly appreciated. :-)
