Here are some practical tips you can share for safe car travel with dogs:

  • Use a pet restraint – A crash-tested harness, pet seat belt, or secured crate prevents your dog from being thrown around in case of sudden stops or accidents.

  • Place crates properly – If using a crate, secure it in the back seat or cargo area, never the front passenger seat with airbags.

  • Avoid laps and windows – Dogs should never ride on your lap or stick their heads out the window, as this risks injury from debris or sudden stops.

  • Give breaks – On long trips, stop every couple of hours for water, bathroom breaks, and stretching.

  • Ease into it – If your dog is nervous, start with short trips, gradually increasing the length to help them adjust.

  • Never leave your dog in a hot car – Even with windows cracked, the temperature can rise quickly to dangerous levels.
