ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY JOB PURPOSE: This full-time position is responsible for the overall administration and management of the organization. Primary and essential duties of this position include the following:

The Executive Director has three critical roles: 1) to work in partnership with the Board of Directors to provide strategic direction and oversight to the organization; 2) to achieve the fiscal health and strategic goals and objectives for the organization through the overall administration of all operations; and 3) to serve as the primary external representative of the organization with the community, media, funding entities, donors and other partners.

In addition, the Executive Director is responsible for coordinating and supervising all organization employees, departments and activities under the policies set by the Board of Directors, developing and implementing budgets, policies, procedures and strategies to deliver responsible animal care and effective, courteous animal welfare services.

The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for the values, mission and vision of the organization, and a commitment to building long-term relationships that will best support the companion animals of the Inland Northwest and the employees and volunteers who care for them.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the development and oversight of all programs and services. Ensures all policies and procedures are administered humanely. Oversees the hiring, supervising, evaluating, disciplining, training, development and termination of all personnel. Ensures the implementation of standard operating procedures and personnel training programs that help staff accomplish their goals and maintains a work environment that attracts/retains quality people.

Responsible for preparation of the operating budgets and accountable for all expenditures. Reviews and approves all department budgets. Oversees bank, savings, gift acceptance and investment policies. Ensures investments are managed by reputable agents.

Maintains financial records showing business transactions, inventories and tax information. Uses internet and a variety of computer software programs to analyze statistical data to develop new strategies, projections, determine trends and prepare reports.

Responds to complaints about employees, volunteers and facility procedures. Assists customer service representatives when dealing with difficult situations and resolves problems of a unique or sensitive nature. Responds to community concerns regarding external animal welfare issues within established position statements.

Develops long-range plans and strategies. Ensures that all policies, plans and programs are regularly reviewed and modified in an efficient manner. Stays abreast of current animal welfare issues as well as the changing needs of the community. Ensures the shelter philosophy and mission are relevant and practiced throughout the organization.

Meets with shelter management team on a regular basis to review reports, procedures, problems and discuss new strategies. Attends meetings of employees as necessary.

Meets regularly with the Board of Directors or governing body to present reports and apprise them of important issues, problems and opportunities. Assists the various committees with their specific assignments. Serves as liaison between the board and staff.

Represents the shelter as the chief spokesperson. Seeks out and maintains community contacts with government officials, agencies, civic groups, partner organizations and the media. Attends pertinent workshops and seminars, and networks with other executive directors.

Responsible for the oversight of the organization’s fundraising programs. Fosters relationships with donors, businesses and foundations. Meets with potential donors to explain the shelter’s mission, philosophy and long-range plans. Provides opportunities for community support through volunteering and donations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must have demonstrated competency in areas such as fundraising, program and fund development, board relations, and financial management.

A bachelor's degree preferred and a minimum of 5 years comparable executive level work experience in leading an organization of similar size (and mission), or providing increasingly responsible leadership in a senior management capacity.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, including strong ability to develop relationships with foundations, corporations and individual donors as well as implement creative strategies for sustaining and raising new sources of earned and contributed revenue.

Excellent financial management skills, including clear financial responsibility and authority for managing similar-sized (or larger) budgets and ability to ensure accurate financial reporting.

Strong ability and desire to serve as staff leader and mentor; excellent supervision and staff/volunteer support skills with proven ability to work with different work styles and to facilitate clear communication and create a corporate culture.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including being able to be a key media and public event spokesperson.

Exceptional creativity and strategic skills, problem solving abilities, and proven ability to develop and implement innovative programs and strategies to promote collaboration and achieve mission objectives.

Starting salary: $75,000-$100,000 DOE annually plus benefits

Reports to: President, Board of Directors

Supervises: Associate Director, Accountant, Office Manager, Director of Operations, Shelter Manager, Development Director

Supports: Management team, Treasurer-Board of Directors, External Auditor

FLSA Status: Exempt
