08-16-2021 12:07 PM

Learning objectives

Industry leaders now recognize pet reunification programming as at least equal in importance to adoption programming. Keeping pets out of your shelter has innumerable benefits to your organization, not least being the trust, goodwill (and donations!) you'll earn from your community. Add to that the joy of a pet and their family seeing each other for the first time after a period of grief, fear, and uncertainty, and there are no downsides to implementing a lost pet reunification program. After successfully completing this course you will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of addressing lost pet reunification before, during, and after the pet goes missing
  • Identify the benefits to your shelter of lost pet reunification at each point in the pet reunification process
  • Prevent lost pets from coming into your shelter by empowering your community to reunite lost pets, tagging and microchipping pets, and spreading the word about microchip registration and updates
  • Create a culture of reunification in your organization with the expectation that everyone is able to begin the lost pet reunification process, performance goals are tied to reunification, and reunification is celebrated
  • Train and empower dedicated staff and volunteers to search for lost pets and the families of found pets
  • Elevate the role of field service officers from enforcers to helpers who reunite lost pets in the field and help families prevent lost pet recurrence
  • Choose technology that will help your organization successfully reunite pets and families

  • Create lasting relationships with families after a pet has been reunitedUse data to create a baseline for pet reunification at your organization, establish measurable goals, analyze success, and make adjustments to your program
