Hello, everyone—November 25 is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This year, the focus is on digital violence—online harassment, deepfakes, stalking, doxxing, and other tech-based abuse that targets women. The UN notes that digital violence is growing quickly, especially with easy anonymity and new technology like AI.

Digital abuse doesn’t stay online. And for many, their pets become part of the situation too. Reports indicate that up to 70% of domestic violence victims have pets (Domestic Violence Awareness Project). In abusive situations—whether the abuse starts digitally or in person—pets can be used as a tool of control. Some survivors delay leaving because they’re afraid of what might happen to their pets (Domestic Violence Awareness Project). And pets feel the stress and chaos in the home just like people do.

This is where the One Health perspective comes in: when we support someone’s safety, we have to think about the whole household, including pets.

    • When someone opens up about abuse, asking “Do you have pets?” can make a huge difference. Many people don’t realize that pets can be part of safety planning. Survivors frequently assume no one can help with their animals, so they stay silent—unless a provider or support person opens the door.

    • Sharing info on pet-friendly shelters or programs that provide temporary care for animals can remove a big barrier to getting help.

    • Animal shelters, veterinarians, health providers, and social support services can work together to make things safer for both survivors and their pets.

    • Online threats toward a pet should always be taken seriously—abuse in digital spaces can escalate offline.

As we mark November 25, it’s important to remember that safety and well-being are connected, and raising awareness about eliminating violence against women helps create a safer environment for everyone. 🐾
