April is National Heartworm Awareness Month-a critical reminder that protecting pets from heartworm disease is a One Health issue connecting animal health, environmental conditions, and community well-being.

Heartworm disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis and spread through mosquito bites, affects dogs, cats, and wildlife. According to the American Heartworm Society, cases have been reported in all 50 states, with risk driven by climate, mosquito populations, and pet movement.

    From a One Health perspective:

    • Pets and wildlife can suffer serious health impacts, including lung disease, heart failure, and even death if untreated

    • Environmental conditions that support mosquitoes increase transmission risk

    • Communities feel the emotional and financial burden of preventable disease in pet families

The good news: heartworm disease is highly preventable-and prevention is far more affordable than treatment. Treatment can be costly, lengthy, and physically taxing, while monthly preventives are safe, effective, and accessible.

Attached to this post are flyers and educational brochures in both English and Spanish to help ensure all pet families have access to clear, practical information. Please post or share them.

    Call to Action:

    • Pet families: Talk to your veterinarian about year-round heartworm prevention and stay consistent

    • Professionals: Share trusted resources from the American Heartworm Society within your networks

    • Community partners: Help expand access to prevention education, especially in underserved communities

Preventing heartworm isn't just about protecting pets-it's about strengthening the health of the communities we all share.
