    Posted 09-16-2025 06:01 AM

Get Ready for the Flu Day reminds us to prepare for flu season—and that includes caring for our pets, too.

For people, that means getting your annual flu shot, stocking up on tissues, hand sanitizer, and making a plan if someone in your household gets sick.

But did you know pets can also catch their own forms of the flu? Dogs, for example, can get canine influenza, which spreads easily in kennels, dog parks, and shelters. While it isn’t the same virus humans get, it can make dogs feel just as lousy with coughs, runny noses, and fatigue.

Tips to Stay Ahead of Flu Season

    • For People: Get your flu vaccine, wash your hands often, and stay home if you’re feeling sick.

    • For Pets: Ask your vet if the canine influenza vaccine is right for your dog, avoid contact with sick pets, and keep food/water bowls clean.

By preparing early, you help protect the health of your entire family—two- and four-legged alike!

Thanks for the reminder @Candice Hinkle

The Red Cross has handouts in various languages that you can print and post for others to stay informed.
You can find those at https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/flu-safety.html

The National Sanitation Foundation, created the Scrub Club in 2005 as an educational tool for teachers, caregivers and parents as a visionary, first-of-its-kind website promoting handwashing activities for kids 3 to 8 years old, also has some great resources for helping children stay safe.  https://www.scrubclub.org/

Great reminder! I always make sure my family is stocked up on flu season essentials, but I didn't realize how important it is to think about our pets too.  Thanks for sharing the pet tips-super helpful! For anyone who wants easy vet advice without leaving home, you can actually contact Dutch Pet online; they connect you with licensed vets for guidance right from your couch.

Thank you so much for sharing this reminder! It's easy to overlook that flu season affects not just us, but also our pets. Posts like this help raise awareness about prevention and highlight the importance of flu vaccines in keeping both people and animals healthy.
