The "Porcupine's Problem," also known as the "Hedgehog's Dilemma" demonstrates the trickiness that is inherent to human intimacy. Animals with sharp quills, such as porcupines and hedgehogs, have a harder time huddling together for warmth due to being so prickly. This illustrates how, in order to become closer to another human being, you must become more vulnerable to the hurt that the other person may cause you. This is one of many examples in which we use the characteristics or behaviors of animals create metaphors for our own human nature.
