Today, is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. Around the world, there are an estimated 3.6 million people over the age of 50 living with HIV. The goal of today is to increase the quality of life for people living with HIV through prevention and awareness.
Stigma and confusion regarding symptoms affect the diagnosis of HIV in older people, which is a problem because it is important to get treatment started as quickly as possible. New antiretroviral therapies are keeping people healthier as they age. It's important that healthcare providers create a trusting environment and aren't afraid to discuss sexual health or drug use with their patients, especially those over 50. People at risk can also discuss using PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), to prevent HIV. PrEP is very effective- lowering the risk of contracting HIV from sexual activity by 99% and from drug use by 74%.
When it comes to pets, they can be a great source of comfort and companionship for people with HIV. That being said, because people with HIV have to be careful about germs and illness, they need to take extra care with pets. It's important for people with HIV to remember to wash their hands, keep their pets' nails and claws trimmed to avoid scratches, and wear rubber gloves when cleaning up after their pet.
What are some ways that your organization can spread awareness about HIV and help keep your community healthy?
