Every year on June 27th, the National Association of People with AIDS marks HIV Testing Day to encourage HIV testing in order to promote early diagnosis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 1 million people in the US have HIV/AIDS and about a quarter of those don’t know they have it.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is an infection that attacks a person’s immune cells. It is spread through bodily fluids and the only way for a person to know they have it is to get tested. Over time if the infection is not treated, it can develop into a more chronic illness called AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

The CDC recommends that everyone between the age of 13 and 64 be tested at least once in their life. There are some people who are at greater risk of HIV who should get tested more regularly though: those who inject drugs and those who engage in sexual activity with multiple partners without using protection.

People who have HIV can benefit from the mental and emotional benefits of having a pet but they also need to take some extra precautions. Because HIV attacks the immune system, those with it need to take steps to avoid infections. When it comes to pets, this can include:

    • Keeping their nails trimmed to avoid scratches
    • Wearing gloves when picking up after them or cleaning the litter box
    • Avoiding letting them lick your face
    • Washing hands regularly, especially after interacting with your pet

The good news is that most HIV testing is free or offered at a reduced rate! Because early diagnosis is so important, organizations can help their community by encouraging testing. If you operate a human health clinic or a one health clinic, encouraging your patients to get tested can make a big difference in their life.

Do you offer or advertise HIV testing at your clinic? Do you partner with anyone who does?
