  • 1.  Have you heard of the term Third Life?

    Posted 01-13-2025 08:57 AM

The term "Third Life" is new to me, but it makes so much sense. I feel like between work and family, my third life is something I have left in the past. Maybe my New Year's resolution will be to rejoin my third life. I would love to know how you incorporate a third life or third place into your life.

Hello, Michele. The "Third life" is referring to our engagement in social and recreational activities outside of our home and workplace. You can read more about it in the TIME article by clicking the link here: https://time.com/7202834/third-life-america-loneliness-essay/

Thank you for sharing, Candice. I feel that true third space is one that has no barrier of entry and is easily accessible to everyone regardless of their background. That excludes cafés, bars, and the like as you are expected to at least buy a drink (which can get pricey!) and are discouraged from lingering. The only ones that seem to fit the bill are libraries or community centers, as they tend to exist even in the smallest of towns and are safe spaces for anyone. For this reason, recent movements to defund libraries have been sad to see.

People, especially those working remotely where the lines of "work" and "home" can blur, must be very intentional about setting aside that time to go out and socialize or engage in hobbies. These are important acts of self-care that can help prevent burnout from your work. I engage in my third life by participating in interest groups and seeking out local events, attending by myself or with friends. I also try to make a habit of saying "yes" to plans if I am available, even when I am not in the mood. I end up having a pleasant time anyway!

Wishing you all the best in meeting your New Year resolution, and looking forward to hearing updates!

Allowing for relaxation and engagement outside of our everyday home/work/home cycle can be difficult.  It is so much easier to use the "I'm to tired" excuse but in my opinion when I take advantage of these opportunities I feel regenerated.  As I have gotten older I truly have learned the importance of self care.

With the limited time that I feel that I have, it is also hard to decide if I need me time to refill my cup or if it is better to do a social activity. Both as so important.
