Mammals with the highest rates of cancer-including dogs, cats and humans-are able to live longer, not solely because of evolutionary changes but also because their controlled environments better protect them from predators.
On average, more than 290 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer every week. (8 things we've learned about cancer from animals). Crude estimates of cancer incidence indicate that there are roughly 6 million new cancer diagnoses made in dogs and a similar number made in cats made each year (COP - Pet Owners - What is Comparative Oncology | Center for Cancer Research).
Last year, the American Cancer Society created and funded PAWS (Pups Assisting with Support) to help improve the quality of life for hospitalized children with cancer through support from specially trained therapy dogs. The PAWS program reflects ongoing dedication to improving the lives of children and teenagers with cancer, as well as their families and healthcare teams.
This is another example of how the human animal bond improves our lives everyday!
