🌟 Welcome to all 2024 Open Arms Challenge participants! 🌟

As we embark on this incredible journey together, let's start by taking roll call and diving deeper into the heart of our mission.

📢 Whether you represent an animal shelter, foster-based organization, public charity, or any other organization, we're eager to hear from you.

    Share with us:

     1️⃣ Your organization's name

2️⃣ Where your organization is located

3️⃣ Any ideas or plans you have for making positive changes to your programs during the Open Arms Challenge.

The goal of this Challenge is to increase inclusivity and provide a welcoming environment for all staff (paid and unpaid) and community members, while also keeping pets with people and animals in their communities whenever possible.

What does achieving this goal look like for your organization? It's as unique as your mission. It could mean returning voicemails in a timely manner, providing literature in multiple languages, completely rewriting or doing away with adoption applications, undertaking bias training, or selecting new neighborhoods for adoption events. The Open Arms Challenge is adaptable to any of your organization’s programs and services.

Now is the time to ignite change, to innovate, and to uplift. Let's collaborate, share our visions, and inspire one another on this journey towards a more inclusive and compassionate future.

Don't hesitate to drop your response in the comments below. Together, let's make this challenge an unforgettable catalyst for positive transformation. 💫

My name is Sabrina and I am a volunteer board member with Aiding 2 Adoption Rescue in Pocatello, Idaho.  We are a foster-based rescue for cats and dogs, occasionally a bunny or two.  We have established 2 committees to look at our customer service practices - 1 one to look at our actual current practices (forms, interactions, etc.) and 1 to look at opportunities for improving DEI (ask questions of adopters and fosters).  We want to grow as a rescue and serve all in our community.

    Jenny Webber, Executuve Director

The Humane Society of Hobart, Inc.  - Hobart, Indiana

We are so excited to be back in the Open Arms Challenge again this year! What an honor to grow and learn, welcome new pet family members to our pack, and explore new areas of our community! We plan to continue to expand our translation of core public facing documents into a bilingual format, bring additional resources and clinics to the community of New Chicago, Indiana we began working in last year, and create a formal partnership with that city to provide additional support to a town in our jurisdiction that sits in the federal census tract for poverty.  Our arms are open to volunteers with many different abilities. This year we are creating new partnerships with agencies in our community to become more inclusive and expand our pack to include anyone that wants to be a part of this amazing energy loving, rescuing, and advocating for pets. Thanks to Maddie! We are super excited and grateful for the opportunity!

    Good morning!

Marci here with Watching Over Whiskers. We are a small , foster home based cat rescue in Springfield, Mo that also happens to have a headquarters where we have rooms and kennels to bring cats and kittens once ready for adoption. It's a nice blend of our service to the community as we have an ER fund to assist owned cats in need with a one time paw up, fund and do TNR and also get kittens and cats ready to adopt to forever homes.

During this challenge we plan to do more outreach in our at risk communities using relationships with churches, hospitals/clinics and mental health providers to seek applications from those who already own cats that are not fixed. We do not have our own vet so we reach out to area vets to help us in getting basic, routine vetting on these kitties to stop the breeding before it starts and keep cats in homes.  We are overrun with cats and kittens in Southwest Missouri - lots of rural communities who don't really educate or assist on how to stop the breeding before it starts. We also plan to put some information together on pet friendly housing and how to apply for an ESA if that is applicable to them in order to keep a pet with their family unit. In addition, we who to tackle TNR at a couple of low income areas to get those colonies under control and all fixed.

Hi Marci, what a great idea to put together a list of pet friendly housing and info on ESA application. I am also working with realtors in the area (Oahu, Hawaii) to see if we can come up with a plan to help create information for owners and property management to help entice them to see the benefits on renting to pet owners and possibly some ways to help ease their minds such as policies and procedures that will allow for more accountability and flexibility on the renters part. Good luck!!!

This is Claudia Labbé, the volunteer Fundraising/PR Chairperson for YOUR Humane Society SPCA in Sumter County, FL. We're excited to return for our 2nd Open Arms Challenge as last year's was very enlightening and proved beneficial to connect with new people we had not had relationships with prior to and it forced us to truly think about who we needed to connect with. This year we are continuing with and expanding upon our Spanish-speaking (and other languages incl. ASL) residents including a search for volunteers to help improve the connection with our organization. We're expanding engagement with our IDD community through Best Buddies who will be volunteering, hosting an event for us and benefitting from a Humane Ed. presentation. Returning IDD students from Beacon College are already scheduled to return in April for part of their curriculum and their instructors are looking at developing this engagement in other ways. And this year we are connecting with our State and Federal prisons to create a K9 Prison Program to include those who are incarcerate for a reduction in recidivism, a rise in job skills and placement of more adoptable dogs who have benefitted from basic obedience training too.

Hello my name is Kelsey, I am the Manager of the Washington Parish Animal Shelter. We are based in rural Washington Parish, Louisiana and we like to say our parish is the Toe of the boot.  We are a managed intake municipality, at this time we only house dogs in shelter, but we have a very large low-cost spay/ neuter clinic and altered over 400 felines last year. We are a very "medically based" shelter without animal control, we only have 12 runs in shelter so this does affect our intake and with a staff of three full -time employees, even with only 12- 15 in house we can be quite overwhelmed. We are looking to add a community enrichment garden, and work on fostering more relationships with dog trainers as we see that this is a large hole in our life saving gap.

Hi All!  My name is Jenny and I am the founder at Better Together Dog Rescue in Leverett, MA.  Although our organization only rescues dogs, we have a community animal program that supports all pets at home with their owners.  Our mobile pet food pantry and free store provides food and supplies to the community.  Our location is a bit off the beaten path, so it is not easily accessible.  The van provides the means to be able to be present within our community.  At his point, we partner with our local survival centers to provide these services.  As part of the challenge, we are going to increase our marketing to be able to reach more communities that can benefit from our program.  We know that not everyone attends the survival center due to pride or shame.  We want to be able to set up days within apartment/low cost housing communities, senior centers and public space, such as malls.  We plan to market our program in English, Spanish and Chinese to make sure that we are reaching all community members.  We are very excited to take on this challenge April 1st!

Hello from Rocket Dog Rescue, an Oakland-based Bay Area rescue organization excited to participate in the Open Arms Challenge this year.

Our  Challenge activities will primarily focus on reducing the financial burden for our fosters so we have more support with rescue care. The increase in food costs, general care, and restrictions throughout the county have increased animals in shelters but reduced the number of people able to volunteer. By identifying the costs, and care needs, we will work on providing Fund A Foster kits to help our fosters focus on care, basic training, and the positive transition for our fosters into forever homes.

Additionally, we are focusing on our educational materials so there is a complete understanding of what comprehensive care is for the life of a pet. We have found many pet parents don't realize the cost associated with having a dog in the home and when the financial burden becomes too great, people surrender.

The ultimate goal is reducing the level of surrendered/abandoned pets throughout California, and the healthy transition to adopted homes.

We look forward to learning from this group.

My name is Tiffany and I am the President of Fur-Angel Foundation on Oahu, Hawaii! We are a foster based dog rescue and are looking to expand our reach by creating new contacts with various organizations in the community. This is our first year participating in this challenge so we are excited to see where this takes us! Currently we are working with a senior living community to promote adoption and fostering for seniors to help promote mental and physical health, while also finding companions for our pups. This project may develop into a pet visitation for residents who are unable to care for dogs, so that we can help provide these residents with socialization, companionship, and the benefits of sitting with/petting a dog. We are also in the beginning stages of developing a similar pet visitation program with children diagnosed with cancer. The hope is to bring joy and companionship to these kids while they go through the many stages of surviving and healing from cancer.  Through these programs the ultimate goal is to help the individuals through their daily lives, but also create connections so that there is a potential for more people to meet with, and maybe fall in love with our dogs.

Our current practices involve using technology to submit an application, complete an in home visit, and submit the adoption agreement, so part of our inclusion plan will be to create forms accessible to those who do not want to submit their info or complete the process using technology. Paper applications/contracts and physical in home visits will be accessible to potential families at request. We will also work on refining our off-island adoption processes to make it more clear and accessible to folks on other islands who would like to adopt a dog from us.

Good luck with continued success with your endeavors. I have been working on education programs for students and now we are embarking on providing education programming for seniors about rescue and adoption with Matchdog Rescue. We are excited to broaden our scope and feel it is so important to educate about  the saving and rehoming of abandoned dogs. During the challenge period we will be working with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank to close a gap in our outreach. GCFB serves approximately 300 homebound older adults, many of whom have pets. By nature of being homebound, they have been unable to access our services at our Resource Center. Through the challenge period we will be rolling out a home delivery service for pet food and other pet supplies, and also collecting information about other services needed such as spay/neuter, vaccines, and grooming.

This is our 2nd year participating in the Open Arms Challenge. We learned so much last year! During the past year, we have been collecting data, running mini-pilots/experimenting with approaches, finding our voice, and analyzing data that focused on removing barriers and becoming more welcoming, equitable, and inclusive. On April 1st, we launch our Adoption Lifecycle Pilot, using components from our mini-pilots--starting with how people learn about us to the their ongoing, lifelong interaction with us and community. We are building relationships of trust--they may not be close; however, we believe each of our adopters feels comfortable reaching out to us for help or to chat--even if it has been years since last contact. Our community partnerships are gradually expanding. Thank you, Maddie's! We are so grateful for the world we found--full of kind, insightful people and seemingly unlimited resources--when we joined this challenge last year!

Novastar rescues goal is to increase the time our dogs get out of their kennels for Doggy Day Out.  Rescue dogs spend too much time in a kennel when they are not fortunate enough to have a foster home.  Our goal is to create a program and set a goal to get a minimum of 50 dogs out on Doggy Day Out events.  We will seek volunteers to pick dogs up and take them on a day out to socialize them and pamper them.  This is a challenge that we will continue once this challenge is over for the sake of all our rescued dogs.  Novastar is excited for this challenge and is excited to get the community involved in making the lives of our dogs better!

In the past, reunification efforts have been handled by the customer service reps in the front office. Since the devastating fire in Lahaina last August, the front office has been inundated and our organization has since added a full-time reunification specialist. As we develop our reunification program, we will focus on providing outreach to our underserved communities, use marketing to get the word out quickly and widely in new ways, and aim to develop new partnerships within our community.

Glad to be a part of the Open Arms Challenge 2024!  My name is Miki Van Dusen, and I'm a board member for Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary, a mostly pig rescue/sanctuary in rural North eastern Georgia.  We just started our Better Together community outreach program, which reaches out to at need pet owners in our area, with the hopes of keeping their pets happy, healthy, and in their homes.  We are creating new partnerships with human resource agencies in the area to reach their clients that have the need for Pet food and vet care assistance.   The agencies are Meals on Wheels to help senior citizens and their pets, and a local mental health organization, AVITA.

We are also strengthening our own access to low cost pet food and medications through the local Greater Goods program, which allows us to offer these programs at a low cost to the sanctuary.  We are 100% donation funded, so we are also applying to more grants that focus on keeping pets in their current homes.  Our program also includes outreach for current pig owners that need help with spay/neutering and adoption/rehoming assistance, to reduce/eliminate their current over breading and potential hoarding situations.   Pigs can impregnate at a very young age, so continued education and spay/neutering is essential to the health and safety of the pig population.

We hope our program is able to provide inclusive vet care and pet food assistance to pet owners who would not be able to access it otherwise.

My name is Crystal and I work with Santa Rosa Animal Control in NM. This is our first time participating in the Open Arms Challenge. We live in a small, rural community that sits in the second poorest county in our state.  We have had a large problem with people surrendering or dumping their pets due to financial issues and being unable to afford basic needs for their pets. Some of the programs we have implemented to help our struggling community include free spay/neuter clinics, free vaccine clinics, free pet food, and a free straw program. We are also in the works to start our first ever TNR program for our community cats.  We are working on expanding our pet food pantry to help financially struggling citizens to feed their pets.  We hear a lot of citizens say they are having a hard time affording pet food. We started the pet food pantry in hopes to help keep families and pets together.  We have been able to do this through donations and grants.  Our hope is to be able to connect with our community and have good conversations about what their pets need as far as food, vaccines, and overall healthcare.

    Hello!

My name is Karen and I work with the Humane Society of Huron Valley in Ann Arbor, MI! We are so excited to be first time participants in the Open Arms Challenge. It's been so great to read about what everyone else is doing to support their community! You are all doing such wonderful things. We look forward to learning more about our community through this process and how to best support those that are in need of our services.

We will be working with a wonderful housing group that supports folks who need affordable housing. The housing group is pet friendly and requires residents to have their animals up to date on vaccines as well as be Emotional Support Animals. Our program, Friends for Life, is aimed at keeping people and pets together so we will be working to support residents with getting the items they need to keep their pets with them as they move into this community.  Our goal is to supply them with welcome baskets that include toys and treats, bags of food, supplies such as dog waste bags and litter boxes as well as vouchers for a free wellness exam and vaccines.

We look forward to seeing how this new initiative goes in April!

Hi Everyone! I'm Rita Ortiz and I serve as the Community Services Manager at the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) in the Bay Area. My role was created a few years ago to try to serve our community better by lowering barriers to vet care and adoption. We are making progress step by step. 3 years ago we started a free mobile vaccination and vet wellness clinic that has grown in leaps and bounds, we run a free pet food pantry twice a month,  spay/neuter vouchers, and offer funding towards vet bills provided by a donor fund that is also growing as is the need. We provide 1-month free flea meds, free microchips, emergency boarding when space allows, and waive fees on an as-needed basis. We have a lot of support from our community that helps a lot, especially with the pet food pantry which had been running out of food regularly. Some donors have even set up regular  food deliveries to us for the pantry! We live in a diverse community and  have struggled to lower language barriers but we are doing better, and now offer most written materials in English and Spanish, at lease. The City of Alameda recognizes 7 languages as essential here, so we are working on expanding our materials.  There is a lot  yet to do! It is such a thrill to be a part of this group and learn about what everyone is doing!

Good morning! My name is Molly and I'm a volunteer for MatchDog Rescue in southern New Jersey.

Established in 2017, MatchDog Rescue has been a steadfast advocate for abandoned dogs. Our mission is clear: to save dogs of all ages from unwarranted euthanasia, provide them with temporary safe homes through our foster program, and match them with loving families as cherished companions. We operate entirely on the dedication of our volunteers, who work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome these loving souls.

Each month, we undertake a monumental effort to transport approximately 60-75 dogs and puppies from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, one of the most challenging areas in the US for dog rescue. Despite the obstacles, our team is committed to finding the perfect match for each dog, ensuring they find a home where they can thrive.

At MatchDog Rescue, we believe in inclusivity and accessibility for all members of our community. That's why we're thrilled to participate in the Open Arms Challenge, an initiative aimed at increasing inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for volunteers and community members alike. As part of this challenge, we have extended our outreach program to a local school, where we're hosting a WAGS fest-an event focused on wellness, accessibility, gear, and safety for families, children, and their dogs.

Through this initiative, we're not only providing microchips, vaccines, and fire safety information, but also fostering connections between school members and community resources such as fire, police, veterinarians, and township officials. Our goal is to empower individuals and strengthen bonds within the community, ultimately keeping pets with their people and animals in their communities whenever possible.

At MatchDog Rescue, our team stands united in our mission to save and rehome abandoned dogs. When faced with challenges, we rise to the occasion with determination and enthusiasm. The Open Arms Challenge has been no exception-in fact, it has galvanized our team like never before.

From our dedicated volunteers to our passionate leadership, everyone has come together to make this initiative a reality. We've embraced the opportunity to expand our outreach efforts and engage with our community in new and meaningful ways.

What's truly inspiring is seeing the incredible work being done by other groups and teams participating in the challenge. It's heartwarming to witness the collective effort to create a more inclusive and compassionate future for animals and people alike.

As we navigate through this challenge, we're constantly learning and evolving, fueled by the shared goal of making a positive impact in the lives of animals and our community. Together, we're proving that when we stand together, anything is possible.

My name is Kim and I am the co-founder/ volunteer Vice President with For The Puppies Foundation Inc. in North Mississippi. We are currently a fostered based rescue for dogs.  We have many challenges ahead of us.  The Foundation is in addition to the established local animal shelter. For the Open Arms Challenge, we would like to help existing pet owners with veterinarian care including spaying and neutering to help not only the pet population but, also keep family pets with their families. Included in this pilot program would be a food bank, helping pet owners by taking pets to the vet for them, and training to help people communicate with their dogs. We are in the planning and development stage of the first of two facilities to help the existing rescue community and pet owners for lower cost veterinarian care, along with a new spay and neuter program.  Also under this program would be to help homeless individuals with pets keep their pets when they are approved for public housing.  There are numerous homeless individuals in our area that have pets that they themselves rescued off the streets.  We believe these pets are what is keeping the homeless population going.  Providing homeless individuals with pets access to care and training would not only help homeless individuals but, also help keep pets with their family. We have already worked with one non-profit organization that helps homeless individuals and their pets. I have been called in several times to evaluate dogs and trained with people and their pets so they can keep their pets in public housing.  We are hoping to obtain a partnership with other rescue organizations and the non-profit that helps homeless individuals to achieve our goals.

    Your organization's name:

    City of Perris Animal Control

     Where your organization is located

    Perris, California

Any ideas or plans you have for making positive changes to your programs during the Open Arms Challenge?

Our idea is to make our overall interactions inclusive of our community, no matter why we are making contact. We still provide microchips for free in hopes that we will continue to raise our return to the owner. When returning home, we have started to provide collars so that owners feel inclined to put their dog licenses and microchip tags on their pets. We continue to use our Facebook page to engage with the community and get more pets home. The 2023 Open Arms Challenge's most successful part has been providing solutions to pet owners. For example, providing trolley lines to ensure that dogs humanely stay in their yards, providing suitable dog houses, wound care that the pet owner may not have afforded, and free spaying and neutering for community cats instead of impounding.

Current programs would provide an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program by our two certified officers to educate puppy owners in hopes that dogs will be kept in homes throughout their lifetimes. There will be an interpreter to ensure that all parts of our community are included. We all hope this is a success, as it will add another layer of the City of Perris engaging the community in ways other than enforcement. In some sorts, it is a rebranding of what animal control can provide when engaging with the community.

I'm Tenille from Orange County Animal Services in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Go Heels! (I'm legally obligated to say that during March Madness, lol)

We want to work on all-inclusive marketing, equitable and inclusive processes, and improve ways to open up and expand some of our programs to even more people in our community.  We're currently working on getting graphics and flyers translated into Spanish. These programs include: Dog Foster Program, Dog Day Out Program, Kitten Foster Program, Spay/Neuter Initiatives, and volunteer outreach.

Hello! We are a brand new cat rescue, Kitty Rescue Corp, that started operating in January this year. Although we are brand new we have been growing very quickly and have been receiving a lot of calls and cats. We are located in New Port Richey, Florida and serve the Pasco County and Tampa Bay area. We are shelter/rescue that currently has 42 cats in our care. We have completed 11 adoptions so far this year, we have 11 cats currently ready for adoption, 11 cats waiting for vetting, 5 cats at foster-to-adopt homes and 15 cats currently as long-term residents.

Our main goals for this challenge are:

    1. Expand our reach into the community by holding a public adoption event at our local PetCo. We have already applied for and been approved as a rescue partner of PetCo and are working with the local store managers to hold an event during the month of April where we can introduce our rescue to members of the local community.
    2. Create a Spanish version of our website to help create an inclusive rescue that serves more members of our community. We also have 3 members of our board working on learning Spanish so we can better communicate with those in the community whose primary language is Spanish.

We look forward to pursuing and completing these goals this month so we can grow further and better serve our community.

    Thank you!!!

Hi I am Lisa Coscino and I am the Executive Director at Sage Compassion for Animals. We provide financial assistance for veterinary care to save companion animals in medical crisis and educate about ways to reduce and prevent illness. We serve all nine counties of the San Francisco bay are (a big area!!)

Currently our Animal Assistance Grants serve a general population of folks who meet our financial and veterinary requirements. For the Open Arms Challenge, we are  launching a pilot program that will focus on serving folks in our counties that are 65 or older. We see a huge need for those in this demographic to have the resources to save their pet's life, should a health or medical emergency occur. Many folks in this age group are on fixed incomes, and affording emergency care can be out of reach, leaving surrender or euthanasia as their only options. As we know, losing a pet at any age is difficult, and suffering from a loss later in life can be devastating.

The Center for Families & Animals™, a division of Family Spirals®, is based in Los Angeles, but provides resources and services online.

This is our first Open Arms Challenge, and we're excited to join with you in making life better for families with animals.

We're just beginning to pilot programs. The Center for Families & Animals is committed to improving our relationships with other animals and each other, within and outside the home, and across cultures. By focusing on the quality of pets' lives and their integration within the family, we work to prevent or correct situations of abuse and neglect, in order to help pets stay with their families – living happier lives. I hope that you will find some of our programs useful.

For this challenge, our primary goal is to conduct outreach and pilot, Let it Out! – Discussion & Support Groups. All weekly sessions are online, for adults 18 and older, and free during April (we hope that we can secure funding and/or partnerships so that they can always be free):

    • When Family Mistreats an Animal – "An animal was hurt in my family, sometimes to hurt me."
    • Apology to an Animal – "I was taught that hurting an animal was right, good, funny, necessary, no big deal. Now I question that."
    • Pet Bereavement & Nature – "In my grief, I find solace in Nature."
    • Animal Road Watch – "I was the driver or passenger when an animal was hit (on roads, waterways, airways), and want to talk about it"

These are topics that too often are never addressed due to a variety of issues, often associated with guilt, shame, and loyalty to family members. It is hard to reach people 'behind closed doors' - but we provide safe space to reflect, explore, and find ways to heal. (Note: these are not group therapy sessions.)

My name is Shelley and I volunteer for Albert's Dog Lounge Rescue, based in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  In late 2017, Albert's Dog Lounge went from being a foster space in a converted garage, to a 501c(3), 100% foster based non-profit rescue. Starting with a small team of followers, the rescue mission began to help senior, special needs, and hospice dogs .  With the continuing help of their supporters and volunteers, hundreds more dog's lives have been saved.  Our vision and mission is to be the steppingstone to a new life for dogs who are much less likely to be rescued, adopted, and are at a higher risk for euthanasia.

Recently we had the privilege of rescuing a pup who spent nearly her entire life - 11 of her 13 years - in a shelter!  Thanks to the partnership of Albert's Dog Lounge, 2nd Chance Shelter & Second Chance North, this girl, renamed Fiona, made her way from Alabama to Wisconsin!  She is now coming into her own in the loving home of one of our fosters.

Another recent partnership took place when a desperate adoption/transfer coordinator reached out to our friends at CARE for Pets to say she had to euthanize a dog and was looking for help.  It was a major medical case with unknown issues with a pit bull.  At the same time, we were on the recipient side of the general rescue plea for this dog, and already working up a plan on our side. Within just hours, three organizations (along with an entire community) stepped up and committed to joining forces to save this dog; CARE for Pets, Winnebago County Animal Services, and us.

We will also challenge ourselves to educate children on the responsibilities that comes with owning and caring for pets.  It is important for them to understand that owning an animal is a lifetime decision, not just a "for now" because it "seems fun" and they "look cute."  Albert's Dog Lounge will be "adopting" out dogs to kids this year!

We are also working on a project called Clyde's Closet.  We are blessed with so many donations, and we couldn't possibly use them all - especially those with expiration dates.  We also know our local food pantry can only distribute food.  Clyde's Closet will be a "little library" of dog items such as leashes, collars, toys, canned food, coats, etc.  We also have a program where we (as financially able) support one dog in the community that is in a medical emergency and the family is in a situation where euthanasia or surrender are on the table as a result.  We help cover those expenses so that a family is able to keep their pet in their home.

With added motivation by participating in this wonderful challenge, we will reach out to the community even more, by continuing to form partnerships (as described above) and taking actions that enable pet owners with no/low resources to keep their beloved pet.

Hi!  We are All Fur One Pet Rescue and Adoptions, located in Toms River, NJ.   During the Challenge we are looking to do the following:

    1. Help to keep people with their pets via establishment of a food pantry.  We see people struggling with the cost of a pet (food, vet bills, etc) and this will be a nice addition to our free vaccination clinics that we hold periodically.  We are in an area with lots of retirees who are on fixed incomes and they are struggling with the higher costs of pet food and vetting their animals
    2. We are going to try to expand our existing school education program to other schools (a volunteer developed it and runs it at her school) and the Spanish speaking community.  This program has been very successful in teaching children about the rescue/adoption world.
    3. We are working to create a partnership with ABC (Animal Birth Control) of NJ to explore establishment of a TNR program in our area.  This is a big stretch because the new Mayor is currently trying to close down or privatize the existing Animal Shelter, so not necessarily animal friendly.
    4. Lastly, we are going to develop some marketing tools in Spanish and find Spanish organizations to help us do a better job in marketing to our Spanish Community (approximately 8% of our population)

Good luck to everyone with your programs!  Let's do great things for the animals and their people!

We are thrilled to be participating in the Open Arms Challenge again this year!  My name is Chris Hock and I am a volunteer board member with Oconee Regional Humane Society in Greensboro, Georgia.  We are an animal shelter serving the surrounding region of east-central Georgia with programs concentrated on animal adoption, retention and controlling animal overcrowding in our region.  We reach people and their animals by providing resources to those in need, whether it is through our pet food distribution program, our medical assistance programs or our low cost spay/neuter and TNR programs.  We also look for creative ways to match potential pet owners to animals through our adoption activities.

We believe that people benefit from having animals in their lives.  In particular we have noticed the power that a companion animal can have in the lives of veterans.  For this challenge period we are focusing on our program called "Pets Love Vets".  Our Pets Love Vets program relies on a partnership with the local Rotary.  This year we are executing enhanced marketing efforts while expanding our partnerships with local VFW organizations, and partnering with an animal trainer who is a former vet and has partnerships with many veterans in the region.   We are excited about our new partnerships and their ability to help us match veterans with pets!   We are also excited to experiment with different ways to match our companion animals with veteran populations we were not able to previously reach!

The Rotary provides our shelter the adoption fee for the animal so the veteran does not pay any fees, yet our shelter collects money to offset costs we incur to house, vaccinate and spay/neuter the animal.  It is a win/win and we couldn't do it without the support of our local Rotary!

Kicking our campaign into gear and we hope everyone is feeling positive about April showering your organization with support!

I find one of the biggest challenges is communicating internally to get everyone excited to share. With the pull of daily rescues, coordinating fosters, and supporting new adopters ...and volunteers who give so much but everyone still has a day job so it's hard to stop and realize the effort is necessary to support our programs. And then finding the resources to support our new program.

...but today an adopter reached out and said "thank you." The first Fund-A-Foster kit worked. Eliminating the stress of what to do when you bring your rescue home, what to feed, how to build trust, and which toy to share ...it's in the bag! Three weeks in and a foster is an adopter.  The new parent is still using all the items ...and even using the bag for park outings.

My hope is one becomes many this month and we increase the number of fosters because the financial burden is reduced.

Our action items for this week:

    1. Share the program to our broader base through our newsletter and encourage people to LoveItForward to increase foster volunteers
    2. Identify local business interested in participating by donating in kind items that provide care for our fosters
    3. Social media! Create new content and assets to increase awareness on how people can support our Fund-A-Foster campaign

Every action needs to educate, engage, and empower. A more informed foster volunteer will improve the most critical days a rescue is in care before adoption. I love reading the initiatives and ideas here, and appreciate any tips.

Hello all! Sorry I am replying late. It's been chaotic to say the least.  I am Laura, I am the executive director for the Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot, North Dakota. We at SVAS focus on helping the community. We offer free basic vaccinations to cats and dogs, a community pantry, and we have an emergency housing program for victims of domestic violence.  For this year's Open Arms Challenge, we have created a temporary housing program (Sheltering Hearts) for community members that have fallen on hard times or are in the process of moving into a pet friendly place.  We get calls on a regular basis from people asking for help because they are living in their car, got evicted, etc. In the past, we have not been able to help, but this year, we our mission is to keep families together! We are excited to participate in this year's Open Arms Challenge!

We're thrilled to be a part of this year's Maddie's Fund Open Arms Challenge! Im a little late to the game we just finished a hording/breeding situation and helping a shelter with Parvo ;(

I'm with Beautiful Hearts Rescue in Northern WI, we're dedicated to making a positive impact in our community, especially for families facing economic challenges and senior citizens.

This year, we're excited to introduce our community spay and neuter program, aimed at providing affordable and accessible services to families who may otherwise struggle to afford them. In addition to this activity we have added a unique payment option, including volunteering at our rescue or completing jobs in exchange for the cost of the service. The jobs can range from filing to poop pick up as all of you know the work is NEVER done!

Our hope is that by offering these services, we can support families in keeping their beloved pets and drive towards healthier pets overall. By preventing unwanted litters and addressing health issues before they become emergencies, we aim to reduce the need for costly vet visits and promote the well-being of pets in our community.

We believe that every pet deserves to receive proper care, regardless of financial circumstances, and we're committed to breaking down barriers to ensure that happens. By participating in the Open Arms Challenge, we're not just offering services; we're opening our hearts and arms to embrace those in need and provide them with the support they deserve. The payment options also provides a way for families/people to have pride that they paid for the service and not accepting handouts - they are actually giving back!

My name is Nichole Bethurem and I am the President of Buster's Paw Prints, serving Tehama County, CA. We focus primarily on supporting the owned pets of senior citizens, low-income families, and people experiencing homelessness.

Our community is about to open its first one stop navigation center, which will also house clients, with their pets, in dorms. To support this transition for clients, our focus is on developing materials for crate training, teaching children how to safely interact with unknown dogs, and establishing a pet supply pantry in their store room.

Because the dogs will be required to be leashed in the center, and crated when their owner is eating, showering, etc., we are also creating an off leash dog yard where dogs will have a chance to run and play.

Clients have often resisted coming to shelters because of their pets and we want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible when they move in.
