Academic/Researcher - An individual engaged in scholarly activities within the fields of academia or research. These professionals typically work in educational institutions, such as universities, colleges, or research institutions, and contribute to the generation and dissemination of knowledge. Primary responsibilities involve conducting research, publishing scholarly articles, and often teaching students.

Animal Care/Control Officer - An individual responsible for enforcing County laws regarding stray, dangerous, nuisance and domestic animals, investigating complaints, patrolling assigned areas and performing other duties related to humane animal protection and control.

Foster Caregiver - a nonpaid staff member or volunteer who cares for foster animals outside of the shelter, generally with support from an organization in the form of medical care, food and adoption promotion. Foster caregivers are meant to be temporary homes for animals before rehoming.

Human Health/Public Health Staff - An individual who works in the human health or public health fields.

K-12 Student - An American student enrolled in Kindergarten to 12th Grade.

Legislator/Government Official - An individual who works in a legislative or governmental capacity, including but not limited to, elected or appointed officials, judicial (attorney, DA), public administration, regulatory, and public safety/security.

Shelter/Rescue Director - A paid or unpaid staff member who oversees the operations of a shelter or rescue and generally oversees volunteers, staff and other managers.

Shelter/Rescue Manager - A paid or unpaid staff member who works under the director’s guidance and assists in overseeing the operations of a shelter or rescue. May specialize in specific focus areas and departments, like adoption, foster, marketing or volunteers and generally oversees staff and/or volunteers.

Shelter/Rescue Staff - A paid or unpaid staff member who works under the director and manager’s guidance and assists in shelter or rescue operations. May also oversee volunteers.

Shelter/Rescue Volunteer - An unpaid staff member or volunteer who helps organizations with their mission in any number of ways, including but not limited to animal care, marketing, administrative and facility maintenance.

Social Services Provider - An individual or representative of an organization who works directly in the field of social services. They deliver and coordinate social services to individuals, families, and communities in need.

Veterinarian - An individual with a degree in veterinary medicine, trained in the medical treatment of animals and working towards their medical care.

Veterinary Support Staff - Staff working in a veterinary clinic who provide support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Can include, but not limited to: administrative assistants, clinic-facing staff, maintenance staff.

Veterinary Technician - An individual who has completed an accredited veterinary technology program and helps veterinarians care for pets by providing nursing support, acting as patient advocates, performing diagnostic procedures, and assisting in anesthesia and surgery.

Animal Related Business - For Profit - A for-profit business with a focus on animals (pet supplies, grooming, training, etc.).

College/University - An organization providing higher education, vocational training, professional certificates and/or specialized degrees.

Government Agency (Not Animal Services) - An agency involved in legislation, regulations or government services.

Government Animal Services - An agency operated by a city, county, municipality, parish or tribal land providing animal control.

Human Health Care - Providing services and resources related to the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of human health. They work to maintain and improve the health of individuals and communities. They often collaborate with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders to address public health challenges and ensure access to quality healthcare services.

Military Services - Responsible for the defense and security of a nation. In the U.S., these services are typically composed of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Reserves and other specialized units.

National Animal Welfare Non-Profit/Foundation - An organization that works on a national basis, supporting local animal welfare agencies with grants, education, and other resources.

Non-Profit Spay/Neuter Clinic - A not-for-profit organization that offers spay/neuter surgeries to the public or other organizations, generally at a waived or discounted fee and may offer other medical services.

Non-Profit Veterinary Clinic - A not-for-profit organization that offers veterinary services to the public or other organizations, generally at a waived or discounted fee.

Private Shelter - No Gov Contract - A private/nonprofit animal welfare organization with a physical facility that does not have a contract for animal control.

Private Shelter/Rescue Organization with Gov Contract - A private/nonprofit or foster-based agency with a contract for animal control.

Private Veterinary Hospital - A for-profit veterinary hospital owned by a company or individual.

Public Health Services - An organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the health and well-being of the public. The primary focus of such agencies is on preventing and controlling diseases, injuries, and other health-related issues within a community or population. Public Health Agencies work to improve overall health outcomes, address health disparities, and enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities.

Rescue Organization - No Gov Contract - A foster-based animal welfare organization without a contract for animal control. These organizations generally don’t have a physical building.

Social Services - Social service providers, also referred to as human service providers, can include services oriented toward the prevention, improvement, or resolution of health, mental health, social, or environment problems that affect individuals, families, specific groups, or communities. Providers can be government agencies, non-profit organizations, or private entities dedicated to addressing social issues and helping individuals and communities in need. Their goal is often to promote social justice, equality, and the overall welfare of society.

Veterinary Medical Association - A non-profit association that represents and advocates for the veterinary profession, on a state or national level.
