The Front Street Shelter in Sacramento, CA won a $5,000 grant in the Maddie’s Foster Express Challenge in the “Number of Short-term Foster Trips” category for large shelters (5,001 or more in annual intake). 295 of their cats and dogs went on 475 field trips during the holiday fostering challenge!

Be sure to check out the Chew On This Blog post about their story and read on below to learn more about the tactics used and the animals that found homes as a result of the challenge.

    Doggie Day Out

Front Street’s Doggie Day Out Program makes it easy for the public to participate in field trips by streamlining the sign-up process. Participants can learn about the program,
pick out a dog, and book an appointment quickly and easily online. The shelter uses the Adopt Me App to help participants market the pets they take out. The program is temporarily closed during the pandemic.

    Sia’s Story

“Allison wasn't quite ready for a dog, so she started taking our shelter pups on field trips through our Doggie Day Out program instead,” says Rhoades. “Eventually she met Sia, and they had an amazing connection. Sia was an active pup that also loved to lounge, especially enjoying laying on Allison. That was all it took for her to finally decide the time was right, making Sia a permanent member of her family.

    The Takeaways

“It was a great challenge,” Rhoades tells us. “I think it brought us out of our comfort zone a little, and helped us view things in a different light.”
