    Just out of curiosity. How many of you have a special training program for ACO officers and/or police and what is included? Do you talk about body language, bite prevention, and other behavior centered subjects?

    We do. The Fearful Dogs Project offers a comprehensive canine fear abatement program (FAM), with sub-programs for specific professions.

    Hello Christine, at Los Angeles Animal Services we have a six month training program which covers all of the things; from policy and procedures, laws, animal behavior for a wide array of species, investigations, citations, medical issues, etc.  The officers do a large portion of class room training before they start to go out in the field with training officers on rotations to all of our different shelters so they gain a wide array of experience before they graduate.  Our training has been recognized by Cal Animals and our officers automatically qualify for state ACO certification.  We have a dedicated training Lieutenant who coordinates training for the staff and works with outside agencies as well.   We have found that having a curriculum and training program has led to great retention among our officers.

    Wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing! It would be wonderful to learn a little more about the specifics of what you cover in your curriculum. Do you just cover cats and dogs or other species as well?.
