My heart is breaking again tonight. For close to a year, we have had two Akitas in our care who have killed other dogs. When the two dogs are together, they form a pack mentality so when the dogs are deemed "Potentially Vicious and Dangerous" the owner is required to keep them in a fenced yard with a top over it to avoid escape and to walk these dogs with muzzles in place.
Well, guess who cannot abide by the rules? Yes, the owner. He walks them without a muzzle, they escape him and they kill another dog. So at this point, they are impounded and they have been living with us for a long time...in fact, so long of a time that my Animal Care staff falls in love with them. These are not bad dogs but badly managed dogs by the owner. But who pays the price? Of course, the dogs and my Animal Care staff. There is an emergency hearing tomorrow called upon by the state because of how long the dogs have been in our care. A decisions will more likely than not be made tomorrow, to take these dog's lives away from them, because there is no other option for them.
Our laws and our ordinance have got to do better. I am weary of dogs paying the price of ignorant humans.
