Community Conversations - 3/13/23 - Barrier Free Foster Program

  • 1.  Community Conversations - 3/13/23 - Barrier Free Foster Program

    Posted 03-09-2023 11:42 AM

Updated 3/13 at 3pm - Recording now available to watch on-demand!

We hope to see you on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 11am PT  for our next Community Conversations call!

Our guest speaker will be @Nadia Oseguera, California Program Manager for the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. Nadia will discuss Barrier Free Foster Programming and offer an incremental change approach to broadening your shelter's base of foster care volunteers. This incremental change approach guided her work during her five years with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) where she managed a high-volume feline foster program in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC). Her focus on inclusivity, breaking down barriers and ensuring that anyone who wanted to help kittens and cats would be able to led to more than 1,000 foster caregivers collectively caring for more than 9,000 kittens and cats – from newborn bottle babies to senior cats.

    National Updates

    Presentation: Barrier Free Foster Program

    Highlights from the Chat:

    • "I am new to this community!  I am working on starting an FeLV shelter/foster/adoption program in Western NC.  I am learning so much from Maddie's!!" - Leigh-Anna Bailey

    • "Yes! There are organizations that are managing programs with part-time staff and even volunteers. We're having an organization speak at the HASS Foster Job-Alike next month that has an all-volunteer foster team- you can register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwoc-CvqjMuEtHyo31d1A7l87RB_v-Hz_tZ. This document may be helpful: https://www.humananimalsupportservices.org/toolkit/options-for-foster-care-management/" - Kelly Duer

    • "I can talk to you about our program. We are entirely run by volunteers with no paid staff. We have a Foster Coordinator who oversees our foster program. We currently have around 25 foster homes in the program and have around 200 sick, injured, orphaned stray cats go through the foster program each year" - Victoria Partridge - Street Cats Club

    • "Check out Maddie's University for free resources on how to recruit foster caregivers, like: https://university.maddiesfund.org/products/how-to-place-more-pets-in-foster-homes" - Amber Freiwald

    • "I think there's an assumption that people from areas that have high intake numbers can't or won't help. The reality is that there are a number of community members in those areas already helping dogs and cats (without the support of organizations). There's a huge missed opportunity to recruit fosters from those areas! Also keeping in mind that lots of people can't help in the traditional sense (fostering pets in their home) but may still want to help! Perhaps transporting, translating, etc " - Debra Olmedo

    • "We use a desktop text app, that works with our foster phone called Mighty text. There is a free version, but I would recommend using the premium version. then you can send unlimited messages. You can also have more than one user and still call on the phone and text at the same time. If you have anymore questions you can email me sburgin@cityofsacramento.org" - Samantha Burgin

    • "Our rescue communicates by text and a Facebook groups for fosters." - Tara Conklin

    • "Great presentation w/ good suggestions to remove barriers." - Rebekah Mason

    • "we've had a lot of success applying for grant funding and getting it approved for Lyft/Uber" - NYCACC

    • "Language barriers have been a challenge for us. We were able to get all of our forms and resources translated, but none of our foster staff are bi-lingual. We were able to get other staff to jump in but it created some roadblocks and slower response times for our Spanish speaking fosters." - Amanda Rainey
