Foreign Language Translation

    Hey! We're looking to have our foster resources (mainly our foster handbook) translated into Spanish. I posted on social media hoping for a volunteer, but...nothing. Anyone have any resources on getting that done? I'd also love Chinese as well since we have a good amount of Chinese fosters and I think it would be so helpful for them to be as supported as possible.

    Hi Lizzie,

    We heard from organizations during the last Open Arms Challenge who reached out to their local college and high school Spanish classes to have help with translating. Not sure if that would work for you, but it is a great remote volunteer opportunity and seemed to be win/win, since the students got to practice real life translating. 

    Just wanted to share!

    If you have your handbook in Microsoft Word there is a feature to translate your entire document. Then a volunteer only needs to review & edit it. We haven't done ours yet so I don't how accurate the translations are.

    Hi Lizzie, in addition to seeking volunteers at colleges/universities/high schools, I'd recommend K-12 teachers, teacher's aides or tutors. They tend to have more free time during Spring break, summer and winter break. It can also be a good project for students or the class to collab on. You might also find translation leads at churches or community centers. Lastly, Volunteer Match could be a fruitful tool. If you are going to ask people to translate, I don't recommend starting with Google translate or any auto translator. That can actually add more work on the person trying to edit materials that don't make sense. (I say this from personal experience.) Instead, I recommend just giving the person your English materials and allowing them to translate that. I hope this helps!

    I'd ask your fosters directly if it would be useful for them and if so, do they know of anyone in the community who would like to translate it.  Professional materials that you plan to use for a long time are not really something you want learners practicing on. In general it's better to have a native speaker translating into their native tongue and even then it can be hard work, so offer to pay!  You can look around for online translating services if you don't find anything in your community.

    Great ideas here!  I'm having the same issue but I just discovered that one of our volunteers is fluent!  Someone mentioned universities that's a great idea!

    We are a government facility in North Georgia and we looked for internal county resources for assistance in translating.   I reached out to a retired Spanish professor that immigrated from Cuba with her family when she was young. She tests and certifies our county's Sheriffs Dept, Marshals Office and ACO's for bi-lingual status.  She was more than happy to help us work on integrating our existing and future programs more inclusive of the Latino community.

    We used Google translate to convert out adoption application to Spanish.

    We put our applications into Spanish and were able to build them in Spanish through Shelter Luv. Since Shelter Luv technically does not support Spanish, it wouldn't allow us to send our automated response when they are accepted. We put the links to our Spanish Language applications for foster or adoption, and here is our work around. We created flyers to send out as our automated response if someone fills out an application when they are approved!

    The only drawback is the first page is pre-created in SL asking for name and address and phone number and you can't change it but then the rest can be built in Spanish. We put a disclaimer on our site apologizing we couldn't change the first page. But it's not holding people back as we are getting applications!!
