  • 1.  Incentives for Fosters

    I recently read a FB post about shelters offering financial incentives for fosters ($5-25/day).  Several people weighed in on the comments but I'm looking for other shelters that may have tried this. I help run a resource-based nonprofit and we found this idea really interesting and think it might be something we could pilot with a shelter or two in our area. If anyone has any  supporting documentation to get us started I would greatly appreciate it. If you can't provide documentation but have tried a program like this, I would be interested in hearing about your experiences.

    This is a brilliant idea. Our husky rescue is mostly foster based but does board a few dogs, as we  can't find enough fosters.

    A stipend would be a great incentive to place more dogs in homes where they would get social interaction skills, and family life experience.

    It is also a great way to cut down on the costs of boarding which sucks money from every rescue's budget.

    I shared the article with our board, and think that there are so many benefits in favor of trying this idea.

    Hi there!

    We've done a few sets of incentives for foster/adoption now at Pima Animal Care Center. I'm more than happy to share anything you'd like more info on!  We have some pretty good data sets for anyone looking to make a case to their management/board and can answer any implementation questions as well.

    Dallas Animal Services has also presented on their incentives and Pinal County Animal Care and Control is a great example of a smaller, rural shelter also getting in on incentives (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/ULaFbFH7yjqdDcRm/?mibextid=oFDknk)

    The Pima program was the one I read about! 

    As a non-profit that supports shelters, we would be the one to issue the financial incentive to the foster. Our biggest concern is how to make tracking so simple that it isn't an extra burden on a staff member of an already understaffed and/or rural shelter.  

    We are a small organization and relatively new but I feel like we could raise additional funding if needed, although a grant to pay for such a program would be amazing.

    Does anyone use any non-monetary incentives for fosters? If so, I would love to know what you guys use! I would LOVE to give my fosters incentives but we just don't have the money in the budget to be able to pay them :(
