Does anyone know if there are any companies/foundations out there that provide low-cost heartworm preventatives to 501(c)(3) rescues?

The corporate distributors often have shelter programs you can sign up for. Generally products are sold at a discount. Also some companies offer bulk discounts. We work with patterson, zoetis and idexx.

Rochelle - thank you for that information. I start looking into the corporate distributors for shelter programs and discounts.

Thanks for this info. Definitely will be passing it along to several of the rescues we work with in our area. Info like this is one of the reasons I scan this forum each day.

I wanted to post a quick follow-up on the information I've gathered from some drug companies/distributors.

All of the companies I've spoken to have programs that are geared towards shelters/rescues with physical locations that have vets on staff.  They have to sell directly to a licensed vet with a premises license.  This came from Patterson, Merck and Boehringer Ingelheim and I'm guessing it will be the same for all of the companies.

I volunteer with nationwide, foster-home based rescue, so they're unable to work with us.

Groups like BISSELL Pet Foundation (Healing Heartworm), Petco Love, and Banfield Foundation have funded heartworm treatment and prevention costs through direct grants, not product shipments. These do not require a premises license — you apply with your 501(c)(3) paperwork, share your foster-based model, and request support for prevention supplies you purchase through retail or distributor channels.

Some larger foster-based networks (for example, Best Friends’ coalition members) occasionally extend bulk purchasing opportunities to smaller groups in exchange for joining their membership structure. It might be worth asking within your region or state coalition if anyone is already buying heartworm prevention at scale and can add your quantities.

Some foster-based rescues have been able to set up accounts with distributors (such as Chewy’s nonprofit arm or smaller regional suppliers) if they provide a veterinarian’s signed letter of support. This is a workaround when the distributor cannot ship direct but is willing to recognize a foster-based program under a vet’s oversight.

Thanks so much for the information our intake doubled in the last year and buying retail is cost prohibitive but necessary in the south .
