    Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and this is my first time creating a discussion post. My teenage daughter and I are starting a non-profit to help support local pet rescues and animal shelters. One of the ways we are doing this is by organizing mobile pet adoptions in the community.  I have contacted several rescues and the shelter, but with minimum success. Many already have their own events lined up, do not have the resources to do mobile events, or simply do not respond to our email. I am wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get more rescues and shelters interested in partnering with us?

    Thank you!

You might have better luck by asking the rescues and shelters what kind of help they want, rather than offering something they don't need or can't do.

I don't fully understand how a mobil adoption would work. But I think I agree with the person who said it makes more sense to ask the rescues and shelters what they need in the way of support.  Another thought:  It's always best to present new ideas in person rather than by text or e-mail. If you can make an appointment at each of the rescues or shelters and explain in detail what you have in mind, they can ask questions and you can get a conversation going that may lead somewhere. Most shelters/rescues are so busy it's hard for them to make phone calls or answer e-mails. Making an in-person appointment is best.  Also, if you are going to be soliciting financial support from the public for your efforts on their behalf, the rescues/shelters would like, I'm sure, to meet you and get a feeling for your background and trustworthiness.

I applaud you for trying to help support the work of the rescues and shelters.  Speaking strictly on behalf of our shelter, mobile adoption events are difficult, and we do not do them.  There are a number of reasons for this.  First, all of our available animals are listed on our website.  They update in real time.  That means if an animal appears on the website, it is currently available.   Members of the public come to the shelter to meet with the animal and if it is out at a mobile event, they have potentially missed finding a home (with someone who specifically came to see them).  Also, like most shelters, there is a staffing shortage, and we cannot staff an offsite event like that.  Additionally, the adoption process could take up to an hour - from completing the application to us verifying their info, potentially contacting landlords, etc.   This is not ideal when offsite, not to mention that we need computers and telephones for the process.   Again, I love the idea that you want to help, but if you're seeing a lack of positive response, some of these reasons might be why.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective as a shelter/rescue organization.  This is helpful information. While, sometimes offsite/mobile adoptions might not be ideal, your post has me wondering about another option.  What are your thoughts on organizing onsite events at the local shelter or rescue group? This might draw people in, and once they are there, they might find a pet that they are interested in adopting or even fostering.  Thank you!

For us, we love when people offer to volunteer to host onsite or offsite fundraising events for us (that don't involve us bringing animals).   You might want to see if you could volunteer to host an information table about fostering or volunteering to be set up in the lobby of the shelter/rescue, and have some snacks on the table for people to pick up.    Even better if you're willing to set the booth up offsite somewhere like outside a pet supply store, grocery store, walmart, etc.

On-site adoption events are a great way to make the public acquainted with your program and  your four-legged residents or fosters.  Off-site adoption events can be good, depending on what your state laws specify (some won't allow adoption events at places that don't already have pet-sale licenses).  The down side is that people don't get to see your whole animal population at an off-site event.  And the logistics are sometimes challenging.
Also, at an on-site event at your shelter or rescue, potential volunteers can get a feel for your operations.
