Our focus for the first resource drive of 2023 is Pet Support Services!

    What are Pet Support Services?

Pet support services provide help for caregivers facing hardships with the goal of keeping families together, even in tough times. Support may include, but is not limited to: telephone response and advice, medical support for owned pets, food and supplies, fence building and pet shelter provision, behavior support, vaccines and microchips, free and low-cost spay and neuter, crisis and emergency boarding, owned pet fostering, and pet deposits and advocacy for apartment dwellers.

What problem does Pet Support solve?

Some of the most common reasons animals are surrendered to shelters include issues with housing, lack of access to affordable veterinary care, and the need for behavioral support.  Other reasons include financial strain making it difficult to access pet food and supplies, fencing demands, and a variety of human-related factors such as allergies, divorce, and illness. By providing as many resources and services as possible, animal welfare organizations can work toward reducing the barriers to keeping pets and people together.

How to Participate in this Resource Drive?

    1. Upload/Share Pet Support Services related resources on this thread
    2. Reply with a request for a specific Pet Support Services resource you NEED

What Type of Resources Should You Share?

    • Information your organization has gathered about the top reasons for owner surrender and/or the most common needs expressed by pet owners in your community
    • Examples of & marketing materials for pet caregiver programs your organization offers like Pet Food Pantries, temporary boarding for pet owners in crisis (domestic violence temporary boarding, homeless temporary boarding, military deployment, etc.)
    • Training and education opportunities for staff and community members (ex: free helpline, low cost training, behavior & training support, rehoming support, fostering, etc.)
    • Need more ideas? Check out this "Ideal Animal Welfare Ecosystem" document for examples of what resources should be available in each community to ensure pet caretakers have what they need.

Where Will the Pet Support Services Resources be Stored? How do I view them?

All pet support services resources shared on this thread will be accessible in the "Pet Support Services" folder in the Maddie's Pet Forum Library: https://maddies.fund/petsupportservicesresources

Share & You'll Be Entered To Win $50

Everyone who uploads a file, shares a resource on this thread or replies with information or questions about Pet Support Services during the month of January 2023 will be entered to win a $50 gift card to Amazon, Petco or PetSmart (winner's choice).  Start sharing now!

    Pro-Tips for sharing resources:

    • Use the "Upload File" button when replying to this thread to attach a file. We encourage you to attach the file versus hyperlinking to the file whenever possible. Files that are attached get automatically added to the Maddie's Pet Forum Resource Library so attaching helps make the resource searchable and improves accessibility within the forum.
    • Yes, you can share resources that your organization did not create. Sharing is caring and this applies to resources too! Make sure the creator allows the resource to be shared publicly and be sure to give credit to the creator or source organization.

Want to Learn More About Pet Support Services?

Take this free course in Maddie's University where you will learn how to start or scale your Pet Support Services program by listening to your community members, discovering the gaps in your current services, and collecting data about services rendered and intake diverted (and money saved). Pet Support Services programs are not hard to implement; you can start by retraining your current intake staff and giving your field officers the tools and training they need.

This course is the result of a collaboration between between American Pets Alive!Human Animal Support Services and the many shelter and rescue staff across the country and internationally who have volunteered their time to innovate new programs through the Human Animal Support Services working groups. This course has been approved for continuing education credits with CAWA and NACA.

These are two different formats of a Why Being Pet-Friendly is Good for Business one-sheet we developed for our Department of Housing & Community Development to distribute to housing property owners. I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for with this resource drive since the audience is not pet parents, but I thought I'd share it too.

We have several resources and programs listed on our website. Our service area is just under 2000 sq miles and is made up of unique rural communities, so we do tailor our programs to each community to make sure we are targeting pet needs appropriately.
