  • 1.  Shelter Diversion and Microchip scanners in the community

    Posted 6 days ago

Happy Monday!  In case you missed the Best Friends National Conference in Orlando this weekend, what a wonderful experience!  I was able to meet so many wonderful people and take a ton of great ideas back to our team.   The first session I was able to attend spoke about the importance of shelter diversion and how it can ease the burden of overpopulation.   One of the programs our organization, SPCA of Brevard, Titusville, Florida, was able to initiate involves microchip scanners and a partnership with our local fire and police stations.

As of July 3, 2024, we are so excited to share that every Brevard County Fire Rescue station is now officially home to a community microchip scanning station! This is a wonderful addition to the existing scanning stations at Titusville Fire Department, Titusville Police Department, and Cocoa Fire Department.   All county fire stations will be equipped with microchip scanners and pet reunification information.

This initiative means that if you find a free-roaming animal, you can now take it to any local fire station to get scanned for a microchip. Firefighters will have the tools and information needed to help locate the pet's owner quickly and efficiently.

So far, the response has been outstanding and several successful reunifications have been reported!  We are hoping to expand throughout the county and possibly the state!

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Yes!  I was at the Conference and it was awesome.  I'm in Hernando County.  Congrats on the microchipping stations at fire houses.  Excellent idea and program!  What scanner do you recommend?  I do TNR on my own in the vicinity where I live, so sometimes I get a real feral cat trapped and not just a dumped stray.   I am wondering what scanner works best for an aggressive cat in a trap.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

We went with the AKC Quickscan 650 Pet Microchip Scanner.  Our community partners were able to raise all the money to supply the stations with the scanners.  I did some wand scanners at the conference, that may be an idea.  I am not sure of the price point.  Good luck in Hernando County!!
