  • 1.  Small Foster-Based Rescue Starting Grant Applications

    Posted 4 days ago

    Hello all!

I've recently started volunteering for a small rescue with the mission of saving adoptable pets from euthanization across the US.

My main task is to find and apply for grants.  I've found some sites (Red Rover was quite helpful and lead me here!), but am looking for other resources as well.

Does anyone have any advice for finding and/or successfully applying for grants in the animal welfare space?

    I appreciate your feedback!

We are very small - board of 3 and a handful of volunteers - less than one year in existence. I suggest TechSoup - free membership to nonprofits.  You can get all sorts of software there.  Then I suggest getting Grant Station from there.  They run a special every six months where they drop their fee significantly.  Great resource.

    Hi Karen,

We have been looking at Grant Station. Can you share the pros and cons of the resource?  We have a minimal budget. We need to make every purchase count.

    Hello All,

Following this conversation as our organization must improve in this area as well.  It is difficult to get started if you do not have an experienced Grant Writer or someone that can dedicate several hours a week to grant writing, in my opinion.

Karen, so far in my research I can add the below to the suggestions you have received so far.

    1. If you are a Facebook user, the group Grant Writers Unite may be helpful to join.
    2. You can sign up for the Grants 4 Animals newsletter, they spotlight a few grants each month.
    3. Walmart allows you to submit for grants with a easy process and you can do it at several store locations in your area at the same time.  We have not had success with this yet but it was suggested to me to try and get a hold of the store managers and build a relationship with them which may increase the chance of receiving a grant.

I started writing grants about 18 months ago for our small TN cat rescue non-profit.  I signed up with Grant Gopher (rjunell@grantgopher.com) for $9.00 a month.  The leads she has given me have resulted in over $50K in grants from national foundations coast to coast for our rescue.  I would sincerely recommend her for this modest amount.

Here is a good resource to start looking for animal welfare grants. It also contains a link for additional funders within this org.

    https://www.animalgrantmakers.org/grantseekers

It will help if you have all the statistic and legal docs (990,  501(3)(c) status etc.) for your rescue, as well as a specific program you want to fund e.g. spay/neuter, ER Vet Care.

    Good Luck!!
