  • 1.  Traveling to Argentina with My Dog, Seeking Advice and Tips

    Posted 07-16-2024 02:51 AM
    Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Argentina with my dog, and I am looking for advice from people who have experience taking pets abroad. Suggestions about finding accommodations that allow pets, understanding the rules to bring a dog into Argentina, and how to get around the country are important considerations. Additionally, I want to know about outdoor activities that are suitable for dogs as well as health and safety recommendations when traveling with pets in Argentina. I am preparing for an adventure with my furry friend, and I would greatly appreciate your suggestions and insights. Thank you!

I have traveled to Argentina with my dog, and it was very fun! First thing to do is make sure your pet has all needed vaccines and health papers for entering the country. Reserve pet-friendly places in advance; we found many hotels and Airbnbs that are very welcoming. Taxis and some public transport let small pets ride, but it is good to confirm first. There are many outside activities, like going on trails in Patagonia or visiting parks that allow dogs in Buenos Aires. Remember to carry important items such as water, snacks, and a first-aid kit for pets; also be aware of the local rules about leashes. Enjoy your adventure!

Thanks for the tips about vaccines, pet-friendly places to stay, and transport-really useful info! I'm wondering if you used any particular guides or tours when planning your trip? I find a site called https://gowithguide.com/argentina that gives guided tours in Argentina, and I am curious if it is worth to try.  Thanks again 🍻

@June Thomas  Thank you for telling me! I did not know these new rules were starting soon. Better to be ready than surprised at the border. Thank you for telling me this.

There are new CDC regulations that go into effect on August 1, 2024 for dogs brought into the U.S. - that apply even to U.S. citizens returning home.

    https://www.aaha.org/newstat/publications/cdc-enacts-new-documentation-requirements-for-us-dog-imports/

Starting on August 1, the CDC will require all dogs entering the United States to have a Dog Import Form completed by their owners and filed prior to arrival in the US. Additional documentation will depend on the country in which the dog was vaccinated for rabies and the countries in which the dog has been prior to travel to the US.

    • All dogs must be at least six months old to enter the US, even if they are coming from a rabies-free country.
    • All dogs must be microchipped, regardless of their country of origin.
    • All importers (including dog owners returning with their dog to the US from an international trip) must submit a CDC Dog Import Form (available on CDC's website starting July 15, 2024) prior to entering the US with their dog. CDC recommends printing a copy of the Dog Import Form receipt and traveling with at least two copies of it.

You'll need to make sure you are following all the rules for bringing a dog into Argentina, and then the rules for bringing a dog back into the U.S., as well as the rules for the airlines you plan to use.

    Import into the USA: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/pet-travel/another-country-to-us-import/dogs

What an exciting adventure! I'd be happy to help. Have you checked with the Argentine embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date pet import regulations? Also, consider reaching out to pet-friendly tour operators or travel agencies that specialize in pet travel for advice on accommodations and activities. Don't forget to research local vets and pet hospitals in case of emergencies. Lastly, pack accordingly for Argentina's climate and terrain, and make sure your furry friend is comfortable with long car rides or flights. Good luck and have fun!
