    Hello!

I'm interested to know who administers medications at your shelters. Is it volunteers or staff? Or both? What amount of training do you require for a volunteer to be allowed to administer medications?

Our staff is small, so we rely heavily on volunteers for this task. We do require training and adhere to low stress techniques. However, we are running into issues with medication being administered improperly. It has led to animal injuries and overdoses.

How does your organization handle this?

    Hi!

Our shelter is fortunate enough to have a small medical staff, so they usually do all of the medicating. If for some reason they cannot do it themselves, there is a small handful of the animal care staff that are trained/trusted to administer medications.
