Is anyone else worried that because they moved away from Shelter Animals Count and are now asking everyone to sign up with them, that we will be splitting and thus losing a lot of really important statistical information?

I haven't seen anyone else post about this and it has really bothered me. Best Friends spoke ill of SAC and it is worrisome what that and this change will do to the future of SAC and getting a full picture of rescues and shelters nationwide

Since it's automatically shared from your database, and it's not mutually exclusive, I don't see a problem with being able to participate in both programs.  You can never have too much data, and maybe there will be different perspectives from the two different databases.  Meaning you can get info from one that you wouldn't from the other, and the other way around.  It remains to be seen, so worth participating in both.

That would be easy for those that have data tracking systems that can automatically upload the data.

For small rescues like my own, our data is all input manually and so timewise I would have to choose one or the other.

I sympathize with you. The big organizations don't realize how hard it is for small rescues to do everything that is requested of them, and how so much is stacked against us.  I used to have to enter the SAC data for our rescue manually every month for years, and it was a chore. It would be a pain to have to do it twice. Since we started using ShelterLuv in 2020,  exporting and uploading the data is easy, but SL and other platforms have quite a learning curve and usually cost money.  If you have to choose one database, I would stay with SAC; multiple grantors require that you participate in it and just this week I was required to upload our 2022 data report from it to register for grant opportunities. So far, as far as I know only Best Friends requires the use of their platform for grants. We have never been lucky enough to receive a grant from them (we have received some national adoption event reimbursements though), but we'll comply so that we have a chance in the future.

    This exactly Pamela!

We do not have software and I do not see us being able to afford it anytime soon since we are a small rescue and we take on big medical cases-our money mostly goes to vet bills.

I agree  that since I have to manually enter the data, I will stick with SAC since many grants do require it. I have also never been awarded a Best Friends grant so I feel the same way. If Best Friends could pull the data from SAC that would help us small guys be able to participate in all the data sharing.

    I ditto Pamela and you.
It would be so nice if everything can be transferred to one portal by csv, if needed, without having to  worry if data could ever get lost. I am soooooooo old school!  I can search all animals, microchips, etc, by email..........   While I have 2 board members who are awesome,  I also am a small rescue with 5 acres and literally have to wear every single hat.  Sound familiar?  I bet you are wearing many hats too!!   It becomes impossible to enter everything on multiple sites while working a full time job AND taking care of all the rescue animals, fosters, cleaning, medicating rehab/special needs animals,  paperwork,  vet appointments, adoptions, social media,  transport, fundraising,  etc,  lol !!

Thank you, Amanda, for sharing your concerns.  And thank you, Tracy.  Regardless of the politics, I think we all can benefit from sharing our data as much as possible.  The more databases you participate in, the better the trends being identified.  When Shelter Animals Count started (its origins go back to the Asilomar Accords from 2004), there weren't many options available for any type of uniform data collection and reporting.  Sometimes it was just hashtags on a piece of paper (or many pieces of paper).  Today we have so many different software programs to choose from, it's great and long overdue.  So I'm grateful for what Shelter Animals Count has done for us and I applaud the new efforts being championed by Best Friends.   So, keep on collecting, reporting and sharing your data!  It puts a smile on this old lady's face!  Thanks!

New grant opportunities are always so appreciated! I'm a little confused on what this is?  Does this REPLACE and/or INACTIVATE Shelter Animals Count? Or is it an additional app that tracks stats? Thanks for any clarification

Sadly this appears to be a scam of some sort to what end I don't know.  This form was filled out by our group, the data tied to Petpoint,  and yet no one has record of it. Very odd situation.

Hi Thomas, Since it can take months to be awarded a grant your best bet would be to seek local support.  Ask at area supermarkets, banks, and other businesses if they make grants to local nonprofits. Car dealerships are often good choices to approach. It sounds as though you have not applied to the IRS for  official 503-c tax status as a nonprofit.  Without that status you would not be eligible to apply for many, if not most, regional or national grants. Have you talked to people at area animal shelters and rescue groups?  Start with them. They can give you guidance and might be willing to  partner with you.  Also talk to local veterinarians about discounts for spay and neuter, shots, and other healthcare for the feral cats.   Hope this helps, Margaret

Well it seemed it but I have no idea what actually happened. We filled out the form linked above.  Linked the new data program to our PetPoint and then received an email a month later to sign up for the SPDA account.  When I messaged and told them we had, they said they had no record of it and if I could tell them what the question was on the app, we could still be included in this.  Just seems sketchy since I'd already done what the info above said to do.  Simply aggravating. Maybe legit. No idea.  Just really need opportunities for funds and evidently this wasn't it.

    Hello Kim, and all,

I am the Product Growth Manager for Shelter Pet Data Alliance, powered by Best Friends.

I can assure you this is not a scam. As our customer support staff member shared with you Kim, we have no record of your grant application. We can see you filled out the form (opted-in) to let us know you would be willing to make an account on SPDA when it was live. I know it might be a bit confusing. We had two separate documents you had to fill out. The first one was to tell us you would opt-into SPDA when it was live. You did do this one. The second was a grant application. Filling out the grant application was separate from opting in. At that time, the site was not yet live. Now that shelterpetdata.org is live, we sent you an email asking you to create an account. When you emailed our customer support staff member, she told you we had no record of your grant application but, as my instruction to her stated, if you could tell us what the question was on the grant application, we'd be willing to let you fill it out again (past the due date) as a special circumstance as technical errors to happen. That was the only way for us to verify you had actually filled out the grant application was to tell us what the question in the application was, as there was only one question. We felt that was the only fair way for us to handle this unique circumstance.

Again, this is absolutely not a scam. We will be selecting grantees from the pool of more than 500 organizations that applied.

We are sorry if our process caused confusion for anyone else as well.

    Thank you,

We had a new addition to our feral cat community show up last December, she stayed in our garage the first week, then we noticed that
she was coming into heat for her first time, we got an appt. with the Pikes Peak Humane Society's new clinic and paid for it ourselves.
We are retired and living on a Social Security so feeding & paying for medical is a challenge for us. We can use any help we can get.
Attached is a photo that's typical of our front porch in the morning and throughout the day.
The gray cat is new, she started showing up daily about two weeks ago, our granddaughter named her CC.
The black cat with white we call Sylvester after the cartoon character.
The other we call Goldie, her coat turned out much better this year, she has had a matted coat the last couple years.
Taking care of feral cats wasn't as much of a challenge until lately when we took in our 12 year old granddaughter due to her
parents inability to care for her. Her extra cost is making things challenging to continue to help the cats.
    Your reply is appreciated,
    Thank you,
    Tom & Bev (and Abby)

Thank you. I understand and since the "application" was over a month ago, unfortunately I don't recall what "the question" is that you are referring to. It's totally fine. Grants are extremely difficult to earn in general, so it's fine.
