On February 3, Drs. @Cynthia Karsten, @Becky Stuntebeck, and @erica schumacher will share how new and ongoing research has transformed the way they diagnose, treat, and manage ringworm in shelter settings.

Ringworm stinks! Everyone in shelter medicine knows it, and many wrestle with it. But what we know about dermatophytosis-and how best to manage it-has evolved. A familiar challenge now comes with clearer science, smarter strategies, and better outcomes.

Register to join  your colleagues for practical, evidence-based guidance for building a consistent and effective ringworm management strategy, one that protects animal health and supports well-being during treatment-and preserves staff sanity. Drawing from hands-on experience treating a lot of cats, your presenters will break down updates on what works and how to avoid overcomplicated pathways that lead to increased LOS and unnecessary crowding.

By the end of this webinar, you'll be able to:

    • Confidently distinguish true ringworm infections from look-alikes
    • Build an effective, streamlined treatment protocol, including how to determine cure
    • Support the well-being of animals and staff using insights from the newly updated Ringworm Management Guidebook

    Date & Time:
     Feb. 3, 2026, 2–3:30 p.m. PT

Presenters: Cynthia Karsten, DVM, DABVP (Shelter Medicine Practice), KSMP; Rebecca Stuntebeck, DVM, DABVP (Shelter Medicine Practice), Paws to Elevate; and Erica Schumacher, DVM, UW Madison Shelter Medicine Program

Hi there, we really enjoyed the seminar! Our one question was for the Tricophyton, what is the difference for why we should not be as concerned about spread of that type? We currently have two groups with that specific type in our shelter right now.

@Samantha Guzie - The presenters did answer some questions related to Trichophyton in the Q&A PDF I attached in my post, and you can find more info in the Ringworm Guidebook here: https://www.sheltermedicine.com/library/guidebooks/ringworm/additional-information-on-nannizzia-gypsea-formerly-microsporum-gypseum-and-trichophyton-mentagrophytes. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your patience as our presenters answered the remaining questions from last week's webinar, The Fungus Among Us: Preventing, Diagnosing, and Treating Ringworm! Everyone submitted so many good ones; we've compiled questions and answers by topic into  a PDF for you to download. If you can't find your question, feel free to add it to this discussion below.

You can also find the on-demand recording and resources at Maddie's University. Want to dive deeper into all things Ringworm? Check out the newly updated Ringworm Guidebook. Thanks to everyone who registered and joined us live!

I have a question about reading cultures.

If you have a cat that has been improving (lesions going away, decrease in colonies, partial plate color change), but the tape prep is showing macroconidia with post-treatment morphology, is that considered a positive or negative?

    Hello Matthew,

When monitoring treatment cultures we are looking for a  downward trend in colony counts and don't need to bother with tape preps at all. We do tape preps on diagnostic (pre-treatment) cultures to identify the species but once that's done we don't need to do them anymore.

Hope this helps (and saves you a lot of time!),

    Erica
