Thanks so much for this information! Our organization is seeking to create a sanctuary for primates rescued from the exotic pet trade or retired from laboratory research. We are not open yet, but in the process of fundraising to construct the sanctuary and purchase relevant equipment. Would we be eligible for this grant? If not, are there any ASPCA grants for which we would be eligible?

Hi Tessa! You wouldn't be eligible for this grant but if you reach out to grants@aspca.org, they should be able to provide more information about other potential grants!

    Lauren,

Thank you for the information. We are a farm and exotic animal sanctuary in Florida. We do take in equine but they are normally medically needy or seniors and not adoptable. We do have adoptable animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, birds. Would we qualify to apply for this grant or do you know of any ASPCA grants for sanctuarys like ours?

Hi Lisa! I would reach out to grants@aspca.org about this as I'm not sure how your particular circumstances come into play. They should also be able to provide information about other potential grants!

    Hi everyone,

Wondering if anyone has some insight on the shelters that receive these grants.  It is the impression of the long-timers at our shelter that the awards typically go to large oprganizations serving lots and lots of animals.  We serve around 1,000 animals a year.  Lots for us but not in the grand scheme of things.  Any thoughts appreciated.  And yes, I'ver reached out to the grants@ascpa email but haven't heard back yet.  Thanks in advance. - Jody

Very disappointing that these grants are only for shelters with physical locations. I like to think that foster home based rescues are making a difference in the lives of animals, too. We can certainly put grant money to good use and save more deserving animals.

    Hi Lauren,

Thanks for your grants for shelters.  It seems that due to the current economical crisis, more animals are being dumped with no place to go and donations are down over 70%  for many of the smaller rescues  Grants are highly essential!  There is an issue that affects some of us, though.............. If we do not get the numbers, we cannot get the grants, and if we cannot get the grants we cannot get the numbers.   It is a Catch 22. The use of the word "sanctuary" seems to  block certain opportunities, however many become sanctuaries due to animals that people do not adopt very often, such as special needs, seniors, and behavioral (I have 13 of those).   I am seeing quite a few small but wonderful rescues that are shutting down and this breaks my heart. Do you think ASPCA will provide more grants to the smaller rescues, including the ones that are sanctuaries?   Or even for one that works as a logistical hub for dogs/cats being transferred on buses via ASPCA?  For instance I have spots and 5 acres for temp logistical holds. The possibilities would be endless if there was some kind of backing.

Good afternoon Lauren, please confirm...the ASPCA website says the grant closes 25 Oct.  Perhaps I'm missing something.  I  certainly don't want to miss this wonderful opportunity but a few extra days would be nice :-)  Thanks so much!  Sherry

Good morning. I just saw this grant opportunity from the ASPCA. I volunteer for a rescue in the tri-county area of PA. We do not have our own brick and mortar as of yet, but we are in 4 local retail stores. Would we qualify for this grant?

If you are a true shelter, as defined in their application, you should qualify.  Some "rescues" are not included because most "shelters" are defined as paid for by a state, city, county, or federally funded program.  Rescues are generally 501c3 organizations.  I would definitely carefully check into the requirements and application process and also be able to explicitly define the programs or projects you wish funded.  If you simply want operational costs, you likely would not qualify.   I have not looked into this since I am leaving the rescue I have been supporting and serving as a board member.  No one else wanted the task.  Take the time to read everything.  Definitely seems like it could be worth the effort.

    Hi Lauren!

Thank you for posting this info! I was just wondering if anyone has heard back from the ASPCA yet? I know their deadline to notify people was sometime around Dec 2nd, but wasn't sure they had done that yet.

We are also wondering. December 2nd was mentioned as the date that "finalists" will be notified, so I am guessing that our rescue is not going to be a finalist. But we can hope. I will also email them as suggested.

Hi Jessalyn! All organizations should have received either a finalist email  or a declination.

Our Grants team sent finalists an email letting them know their application is moving forward in the review process. The final funding decisions will be made by the end of the year and orgs are being notified as the applications are approved.

Those that did not move forward have been sent a declination email.

The team is also working through some bounce back emails so if you haven't gotten an email, it's possible that you're on that list and should hear from them shortly!
