Is there such a database for rescue/shelter use to identify potential DNA/DNT/DNR application candidates? We have our own list but it would be useful to have more sharing among animal welfare organizations to prevent our beloved wards from being unwittingly placed in a bad situation. Sometimes, we may be in possession of information that would not readily show up dueing the usual screening and Home Visit.

Actually, I was just going to post about this.  One of our Board members is very interested in starting such a database.  She has local shelter and rescues participating and were wondering if others also want to participate so she can create this national database.  I am wondering if others would be and I could put you in touch with the Board member, who is not in Maddie's, and she could work with you.  We are in Nashville, TN.

We talked about this in the mid-Atlantic region a few years ago (we have a private DNA/DNR list via groups.io).  The problem we faced was going to be vetting those who could access the list.  for the mid-Atlantic DNA/DNR list, you have to be sponsored in by someone who knows you IRL and who knows that you will keep the information confidential.  Doing something nationwide seemed uncontrollable as to vetting of those who could access.

There's nothing wrong with sharing that information in private groups, but it gets dicey if it's public.  It's one thing if you are DNAing someone who has a public records conviction of hoarding or animal neglect/cruelty.  It's another if you are issuing a DNA/DNR or caution because they state they will declaw, for example, or that they haven't kept their pets UTD on routine veterinary care.

I have tried posting a newly developed one here several times but apparently links are not allowed because my replies never post.  I suppose if you want to reach out to me,  I can share the info. You do have to register and be approved for access (rescues and shelters only).

North Shore Animal League America has developed a free, national cross referencing database that includes information on applicants who were denied or flagged while trying to adopt from shelters across the country. The database also includes names and photos of known convicted animal abusers. The database is free to all shelters who register to be a shelter partner which is verified. All shelters are encouraged to use the database for internal record keeping if they would like as well as a way to share and receive records imported by other trusted shelter partners. For more information, please feel free to email me at Jamied@animalleague.org and I can assist you with any other questions or getting you enrolled.

    Hi Virginia,

Thank you for expressing interest in PASS (Pet Adoption Safety Search). The more rescues and shelters who use the database will make it an even more invaluable resource for us all. You just need to visit our website and fill out the shelter partner request form. Once we receive that, you will get a welcome email and be able to access the database. The database can be used for internal record keeping as well as sharing of records from other trusted shelter partners. No one can edit or delete any of your records except for you.

Unfortunately, like so many others, we also suffered the loss of one of our pups a few years ago to a very evil individual. We created PASS in Tucker's honor in the hopes that we could prevent others like him from hurting another innocent life again. We've also ran into that issue as well with how easy it is for people to relocate nowadays or purposely traveling outside their area where they are not known to try and adopt.  Please let me know if you have any other questions at all and I will be happy to assist.

This resource is invaluable. I wish all adoption and rescue agencies were aware of it and took advantage before approving an adopter's application.
