We have 3 orphans born 4/12 abandoned by mom.  We discovered one has an imperforate anus and is defecating through her vagina.  Today she stopped eating and we plan to euthanize tomorrow if she is still with us and not eating.  But, this is the first we have seen in over 25 years of orphan kitten care and are interested in your experience with them.

What are her chances of making it to 8 weeks?  If we have the expensive surgery , what will the kitten's quality of life be?  And what is the likelihood we could find an adopter for her?

Hi Nancy,

I'm a veterinarian, but i've never been in a situation where we've had the funds to be able to consider surgery on a kitten like this. These are all questions that the surgeon who would do the surgery would be able to answer. Here's an article about surgery and risks in dogs and cats.  this paper showed more success.  Here's a 2022 case report. 

It sounds like there's a broad range of options in terms of prognosis; certainly a chance she would be healthy and you could find an adopter.
