  • 1.  Cats: Consent to Touch

    Posted 01-03-2025 12:39 PM

I've been looking for a printer-friendly infographic or set of images illustrating what it looks like to ask a cat for consent to pet them (ideally also with what a "yes" and "no" might look like), but I haven't had any luck with google or Fear Free resources. Does anyone have any images they use or suggestions for where to look?

    Hello @Alicia Naundorf,

That's a great question.  For our How to Speak Cat course on Maddie's University, we included two graphics that shows facial expression and body posture continua, from very aggressive to very confident.  This may not fit your needs, but they are printable and shareable.  I sent you the 2 jpgs via private reply.

    Thank you for sharing, Alison!

It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but I will absolutely save those images for other projects that I'm working on!

I'm looking more for an infographic with instructions on how to greet a cat politely (a "finger-tip hello"/petting etiquette/asking for consent and checking in). I've been looking for a while and haven't found anything so far. I'm lucky that my shelter has a communications team, so I've asked them to help me create something. Hopefully it'll turn out okay!

Let us know how it works out, @Alicia Naundorf.  If it's shareable we'd love to be able to do so here!  I can also ask our cat experts if they know of anything.

BTW Maddie's Fund is having a special half-day webinar all about kittens on March 4. If you're interested, find out more and register here: https://forum.maddiesfund.org/campmaddiekitten

I will definitely sign up for the Kitten webinars! That sounds fantastic :)

I'll share what we come up with! Over the last 7 months I've written multiple cat behaviour resources for the Edmonton Humane Society's website and I'm hoping the Consent to Touch handout turns out well!

    Hi Alicia,

Just for fun, I asked an AI generator to create images showing how to safely greet a cat.  Attached are jpgs it created (in seconds!). This is of course not what you might be looking for, but it may be a way for you to create your own diagrams!

Here's a 1-minute video demonstrating petting consent for felines in a shelter setting. I love the idea of a one-pager! If you find this (or any) video helpful, maybe it could be a simple one-pager with a QR code.

Thank you for sharing that video! I really like it! I've sent it to our volunteer department to see if they want to add it to their training process :)

My two main ideas for the handout is to have it available on the shelter's website in our free behaviour resources (I talk about asking for consent in the handouts I've written about aggressive behaviour), and to have it in paper form for the adoptions team to use in their counselling appointments.  I think a simple infographic will work best.

It seems like it doesn't exist in the form of an infographic, so hopefully the one my shelter's communications team helps me create can fill that gap!
