  • 1.  Closure of shelters

We have a catastrophic situation about to befall the shelter animals in Los Angeles who are already vulnerable.  Our Mayor Karen Bass has proposed slashing the animal services budget by 6 million$, laying off 60 people and shutting three out of six animal shelters in metropolitan Los Angeles.  I dont have to spell out what this would mean.  There is a huge public backlash, but if it comes to pass, are there other shelters around the country that have been privatized?  Some of us are thinking to maybe convert one of them to be used to house rescues.  Anyone have any experience with this?  If anyone from L.A. is reading this call your local council person and the mayor's office to protest.....

We are a private shelter and only get county funding for strays that come in (daily fee for stray holds per state holding law). The rest of our money comes entirely from donations, fund raisers and adoptions. It's not easy  to be a private shelter and raise all the money needed, but it's doable for us. We were very fortunate to have land donated to us 20 years ago to build a shelter and then did a huge capital campaign to raise the money needed to build. That being said, we are a lot (A LOT) smaller than LA, and I can't imagine the fear going through the shelters out there thinking this could come to pass. I really hope people fight your mayor on this and she backs down from such an extreme and hostile measure against the animals. :(

Dekalb and Fulton Counties in Georgia are operated by Lifeline Animal Project.

    Cincinnati  Animal CARE Humane Society

    KC Pet Project

This is beyond disturbing. Budgets need to be increased to appropriately support animal services organizations. They provide essential government services that are important to pet owners (65-70% of population) and non pet owners.  Supporting animal services organizations, supports the community. There's all of the health and emotional benefits, economic impact, combating isolation and bolstering resilience, plus strengthening community through pro social pet related activities.

Here's a unique angle that must be considered before the city chooses to transition the shelters to private entities. Here in Oakland, there were issues with the Oakland Museum of CA being privatized because it eliminated city employees who are union members. I don't know details, but I know it resulted in the city to make a blanket decision that no other public agencies will be privatized.
